If it's the same as it used to be, you'll get a form from the DVLA, you fill in that form and send it and the V5 for the car the plate is going on to the local DVLA office (or take in person, but it still takes them 1 week to do it).

They then send you a letter to tell you the transfer has gone ahead, a form that entitles you to get number plates and a new tax disk.

You get the plates, attach them to the car, put the tax disk in, ring up your insurance and tell them of the new number, then send the old tax disk back.

Some time after that you get a new v5 showing the new number.

I think that's about it.....

You need to take the car to the local DVLA office with the old logbook and the tax disc, mot and insurance.

They'll then do the biz and give you a special form that lets you go to a local company to make the plates, you can't get plates made without the log book showing that reg no or the special form they give you.

Have you had them do it there and then?

Last time i took everything (2 years ago), they still made me wait and returned the stuff in the post about 4 days later.

So i completly wasted the time going there. The only benefit i got by going there was being 100% sure they'd received the form......

If yours was done immediately, i feel hard done by......

At the local office in Swansea both times i've transferred my plate they did it all on the spot for me, they sent me a new logbook in the post but gave me a special form saying i could have the plates made.

its a very grey area, you can order them online but they'll be sold to you under the guise of show plates make sure they follow the rules for being road legal, no funny spacing, no logos aside from the Eu, English, Welsh or Scottish Flags on them and they HAVE to show the postcode of where they were made, Also i wouldn't go mentioning it to the DVLA that you've had them made they can be a bit funny.

In the past i've looked for "Road Legal Number Plates" on ebay there are people there who sell them as showplates but they are made to road legal specifications

I've always been very careful the form the DVLA give you from memory gives you 7 days grace to get the plates made, but i told the insurance company as soon as i got home from the DVLA office. I also being a bit anal about things swapped my plates but didn't drive my car until after midnight when MID had updated to show the car was insured on the private plates so i didnt fall foul of any overzealous copper with ANPR.

If you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates, you could be fined up to £1,000 and your car will fail its MOT test.

What you must not do with your number plate...

The law states that:

  • You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
  • Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).

That means:

  • No stylised letters
  • Don't move the space around
  • Don't misrepresent letters / numbers using screws or fixings
  • Don't misrepresent letters / numbers using squashed or distorted letters
  • No images other than the approved flags (no football emblems, etc)

Full details of the requirements are included in The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

What's the British Standard for number plates?

The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics of the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and reflectivity.

The British Standard also requires each number plate to be permanently and legibly marked with the following information:

  • The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
  • The name, trademark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier (The company that made the plate)
  • Name and postcode of the supplying outlet.

Other options:

  • A non-reflective border
  • Euro-symbol with national identification letters

Remember if you have an "illegal plate" aside from any fine you can face the Police can also have the DVLA revoke the plate from you.

Didn't need to take the car last time I did one of these in Edinburgh. Just took the papers in and they sorted everything there and then.
