Caliper rebuilding

Featured Replies

I have a complete setup from an ocatvia VRS waiting to go on the fabia.

Before they are fitted im going to strip them and rebuild them, i understand i can get the front pistons out with an air compressor, but how do i get the rear caliper pistons out?

The rears will wind out mate left way

Best to get a caliper tool for the rears so i can wind them in and out?

Yes that's best and easiest, you can get a cheap tool for around £10 iirc... Think it has a half inch drive to use with a ratchet, should be ideal for what you need. Never used one tho, just seen them on eBay and mean to get one for my toolbox.

Cheers, think i will get a tool and strop the calipers down.

Rebuild kits are already on the way, going to paint them before rebuilding

Ye mines run off the air lime as im a lazy t**t

be careful of your eyes if you use compressed air to force a caliper piston out, brake fluid is ver nasty in the eyes, trust me i've done it... you dont need a wind tool to remove the piston, just use a good strong pair of pin nose pliers or circlip pliers and wind it with your hand, it should come out with fairly little resistance

Here's the tool I'm talking about, I don't have the eBay link but have the item number 181121546384

Search that on eBay and you will see the caliper tool or search brake caliper rewind cube.

For what you need must be ideal or the full kits are only £25 so... Take your pick!

Calipers are being stripped down this weekend to be painted and rebuilt... not sure i understand how to remove all of the handbrake mechanism from the rear calipers

It's really simple for the handbrake. Literally 1 wire with a lump of metal at the end stopping it coming off.push the handbrake leaver on withstanding and pull the cable off with point pliers or by hand.

I've done it a few times now so have it down to a fine art :)

You need a long reach thin point nose pliers to remove a circlip in the calliper. Pita to get to. I cant find a removal tool long enough to reach it. Same ones in the piston too.

I seem to remember finding a better guide on the web - in the end I just handed my old seized one back in against rebuilt Pagid one from ECP. There is definately a link to the proper circlip pliers out there in a better more specific guide covering these Lucas/Girling/TWR callipers.

I will have look around for a better guide and tools.

I'm in no rush with the rears as the ones on my car are working fine, just gonna fit the upgrades when and iff

Let us know if you find any other guides, as I'm wanting to rebuild my rears soon

Adding the two guides together i think they pretty much cover it, ive found the circlip tools that will reach inside as well

Nice one for that. Bigger job than I thought! Was hoping to get someone to help me remove, strip, rebuild and put them back on in the same day. But think I might have to get a set of old calipers and try and take my time with them instead, then swap them once I've done.

That is exactly what i have done
