my car doesn't smoke.

Featured Replies

never has. never seen any rear smoke except once when it idled from cold to full temp in the drive and I got a cloud of white smoke from the oil when I drove off. back doesn't get dirty. no black clouds with foot down.

other diesels do. should I be worried, or smug?

The PD170 is fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

It's purpose is to catch the soot. It then burns it off at high temperatures during a 'regeneration'.

This is why your vRS doesn't smoke.

And white smoke is water, oil smoke is blue.

White steam is water. White smoke isn't! :o)

My DPF equipped PD170 vRS occasionally releases white smoke when I lift off the accelerator midway through a regeneration.

Any ideas what this is?

If you've got a 170pd and don't know about DPF's smug wouldn't be the word I'd use..... Have a look on SUK's website for the latest DPF guidance as tjete's now seperate ones for pd and cr now...... Unless you're doing a Seb and just casting some bait to see if you get any bites!

Ok, see where your coming from as they say....possibly the fact that not all oilers had DPF's fitted in any given year until recently hasn't helped. E.g. apparently you could get other pd engines used in octys up until 2010 which didn't have a DPF as only the 170 pd vRS had one fitted at that stage, so guess that was common across VAG and others could have been in the same boat. Obviously now all the VAG crs have them whether you want one or not! Guess those that don't have one are laughing as they don't have to think about regens.

SWMBO has a 57 plate 1.9 pd Seat and that's not got one-more by luck than judgement on my part and that smokes a little on start up but as she does a lot of stop start commuting I'm glad it's not got one.

Cheers

Incompletely burnt fuel.

Ah OK, so on the basis that a regeneration of the DPF requires additional fuel and the fact I'm backing off the accelerator I'm therefore guessing this white smoke is normal?
