painting front chrome grill surround.

Featured Replies

Hi. Is there a thread on best way/products to use to spray chrome grill surround?

Thanks

Remove it and spray it with plasti dip job done !!

+1, probably the best way to do it

All the plastidip I've seen stone chips like crazy then peels off.

I'd do it the old fashioned way and sand it back to bare plastic and spray it. Doesn't take long with a sander

Cheers guys. Might go or easemiest first :), is B&Qs "plasti-coat same thing as plasti-dip? An I just spray it as it is now without any sanding prep?

I did mine with halfrauds rattle cans,dm did it in a day and no its not perfect but nice to have abit of shine to it compared to plastidip!

No plasticoat is just paint. Plastidip is a rubber spray

Wow that's nice! I wanted to paint mine the original colour though, but that does look good and a bit easier to use :)

Is it possible to get the chrome insert out without dismantling the whole grille? The bolt heads look like big blobs of rust that will just turn into dust if I even look at them :(

It's easy. Remove complete grill from bonnet.A few torx screws. Then separate crime portion working from the back with a flat blade. Clean chrome section with suitable cleaner. Then about three coats of Plastidip leaving 20 mins In between. Then leave for a couple of hours. I also warm the can in a sink full of very warm water for about ten mins prior to application and also shake can well. Hope this helps.

You can make Plasti Dip shine too if you want to. Just use one of the Glossifiers or Metalizers on top of the normal Plasti Dip.

Wrap it! Matt black or carbon

Do you have to notify the insurance if you paint the grill?

Mine is wrapped. Takes longer than Plastidip but better chance of avoiding chipping. Cheap too, £4 is enough to wrap two grills.

Can you explain this wrapping please?

It's just a sticky backed vinyl that you apply to the grill and 'wrap' it around the grill itself. Easy to do with a hair drier to help you stretch it into place.

I used plastidip on mine, the first time it was a bit patchy, so I did it again, and this time it was much better, until I took it to the jetwash and it started to peel at the edges.

So i've painted it now.

i have a spare surround that I had painted black and then when it chipped started re-painting with Plasticote. It wasn't a great success and I got few up with the length of time the Plasticote had to be left between coats if it needed to be rubbed down, so I just put the chrome one back on.

If anyone wants it I will sell for £15, but you will need to sort the finish off yourself, don't complain because I already know its carp

All the clips are intact on it, just the paint is rubbish.
