ARP head bolts? Not necessary, just use a new set of standard bolts. ARP bolts are snake oil.

I believe that there are a number of different thicknesses of head gasket available, you may need a slightly thicker one if your head needs a lick to get it true.

ARL is the 150 tdi engine!

Isit smoking atall lloyd? Are you still getting the coolant around the cap? Personally if i thought the gasket was on the way i would be finding a garage to pressure test it, dont risk leaving it and causing further damage mate.

Thanks gents booking it in ASAP. ARL Head bolts are meant to be stronger to stop head lifting again in the future.

Gasket, depends which is fitted matey, they came in 1,2 or 3 hole which measured the thickness, you'd need to know which yours has now.

Oh and a few people only losing coolant at high boost have had pressure test/sniffer test come back all ok despite the hgf

I didn't know about the ARL bolts, was only commenting on ARP from experience. Looks like a useful upgrade.

The issue you run in to with skimming is the glowplug, injector and valve now sit closer to the pistons, so you lap the valves but still end up with your injectors and glowplug sitting closer..only very slightly but it can cause issues. Your valve and piston wont be any closer together (as you've lapped the valves back into the head) so fitting a thicker HG can just create more issues.

The general word is that PD heads aren't really suitable for skimming but a very tiny amount you can generally get away with.

'Licking' a head is Engineer speak for taking a minimal skim to guarantee truth, our machine shop would always do it as a matter of course during the reconditioning process. Head gasket thickness is specified to ensure the relationship between the cam pulley and the crank pulley remains within tolerance since PD engines are incredibly sensitive to cam timing. But you knew that already, right?

I can only assume its down to me already having ARL headbolts and perhaps the mapping is putting less pressure on whatever causes the head to lift in the first place? The mechanics of why headlift occurs is slightly beyond me.

How much power are you running as I doubt you're getting head lift off a mildly tuned tdi without massive amounts of boost pressure.

Try tightening the head bolts down a quarter of a turn, just incase the bolts have stretched!

With higher flowing nozzles.... I'm building a 300bhp tdi this year, hence the question. Nvm

More than enough fuel! Topping out at late 280's bhp as requires performance cam and head work
