Auto Express Greatest Drives 2005

Featured Replies

Everybody knows we got 15th last year, I reckon we're in it again - look at the photo on the 'Next Week' section in this weeks episode. There's a new Golf GTi so it's not last years photo - in the back right corner you can see the grille of a silver car - I'm sure it's a Furby.

I am astonished there hasn't been a raging debate abou this today....unless I have missed a thread!

Yes its there.Cant remember the position. But they have had it chipped!

Not seen a car magazine do that and admit it.Looks like their beloved long term test car.Still slower round a track than most.

Told you all! :) :)

Nobody believed me and they all ignored this thread.

Interestingly it's the only modded car in the list - seems a bit unfair to do this.

BTW, came in 17th.

Does the Cooper S Works not count as a "modded" car?

Interesting to find the Fabia in the list and not the PD160/1.8T Ibiza Cupra.

The Cooper S Works has a warranty.

Guess that's the difference.

Can you not keep your warrenty with a Superships remap? I am sure some dealers where offering this at one stage.

There's been an official communication from Skoda UK stating that remaps/chips of any sort (even if done by a dealer) are not warrantied by Skoda UK at all. Some dealers offer their own support but you're on dodgy ground if anything serious that has to go by SUK happens.

Or if the service manager at the dealer changes and he has different ideas ;)

Chris

Auto Express presumably would have needed Skoda uk agreement to superchip? Wonder if this means a shift in their position on remaps & the like?

That too :(

It's weird right........

In Germany etc you can buy a fullly modded VAG Group car, by the likes of oettigner and it be covered by the manufacturers warranty, but in Crappy old england you can't??????

Seem to remeber quite a few years ago like, that you could buy GTI Engineering modded MK2 Golfs direct from VAG UK with the full warranty!!!

Told you they had the car chipped hence the favourable 0-60 runs :D

It appears it has only just been done. The Auto Express Fabia vRS (silver) was not the same as the Autocar long termer (a red vRS) which had nothing done to it and still posted scorching times

Interestingly Auto Express have said they are going to be doing an article on the very subject of chipping their vRS.Would think it should be over the next few weeks. The part that interested me at the moment was the fact they reckon it now pulls right through the rev range :rubchin:

We will see! :D

Was it actually Skoda UK's car, or was it a dealer's car that had been loaned to them?

Chris

Superchips offer a warranty on their work, basically if your dealer/manufacturer refuses to pay up because it was modded (or the mod caused/led to the damage) they pay. It's an insurance backed scheme. They've offered it for the last 2 -3 years.

I had one on mine for 90k miles & I liked it. Not as powerful as some, but, it had a warranty.

As lozgti points out, different magazine :P

Also, dont you remember the fact that the Autocar one achieved that 0-60 time only once, but repeatedly managed 8.2 seconds? ;) And also the fact it took 24 seconds to reach 100.

Doh wrong again... :D

That's a good idea, but I bet it still depends on the dealer. Technically, your whole warranty is invalid if you make any mods at all, and I bet the superchips mod only covers the engine. Arguably, if your dealer was a git and you had a remap and then your stereo packed up at 3 months old, for example, the dealer would technically be within their rights to refuse to fix it, and I doubt superchips would pay for it to be fixed either... :rubchin:

Always a problem with modding, that - still I will probably do it at some point. As long as you stay clear of remap/tuning boxes, changing brakes/suspension, it tends to be ok.

Problem is when you are a member on this site you tend to get infected with the need for modding :D

Are the PD160 intake and green filter not mods ? ;)

Yep they are - but they were accepted by my insurer as non-mods ;)

My dealer knew about it too and strangely they said the strut wouldnt be considered a mod, unlike the intake & filter...

It's BMW approved.

Well Superchips are the brand leader and cater for mot cars' date=' like it or not. They probably organised a freebie for the plug.

Right Chipping vs Remap.

remapping is basically replacing the software in the ECU with a new programme via a software upload.

Chipping is exactly the same but the relevant microchip in the ECU is replaced with a new reprogrammed one instead of just uploading a new map to the existibng chip.[/quote']

Cheers Roo.

I take back what I said about not seeing a car magazine do this before.IIRC the same magazine or a sister magazine were test driving a chipped BMW(think it was 330d)

Memory is a bit hazy on this but I think it was about

There's been changes to the law re modding and warranties. A dealer (even if they're a git) can only refuse to fix something directly related to the mod, and even then if it goes to court they have to prove the mod has impacted the modded component.

That's why if Superchips warranty the engine etc the whole car is covered.
