Screamer pipe? Teach me about turbos.

Featured Replies

Ok, I realise that most of you folk would frown and grump about the hoonigan idea but ive been mulling it over and though it might be a cool thing to do on a fast road vrs..

Having the car looking the part and pulling like a train is great, but the part missing, and for me it's a favoured part, is the sound. with my decat the car makes a nice whistle, but thats it. When boosting its silent and rather uneventful.

So, I propose these questions;

Can it be done?

How would it sound with 1.55 bar escaping through it?

Would the excess boost normally just be dumped into the exhaust and wasted or would it be recirc'ed?

In my mind im picturing no notable changes when cruising and pottering but when on boost a super mad aggressive roar?

I'm not a chav or an attention seeker but the way i see it, the vrs has one sound attribute, the turbo. Would'nt it be cool to emphasise it?

I have my flame suit on so please speak your mind!

Think a screamer pipe can only be done to a petrol because it comes off the external wastegate and our turbos don't have that set up. Not 100% on that but sure I read it somewhere about fitting one

You can't do it to a diesel (not easily anyway) because diesels use variable geometry turbochargers whereas petrols use a fixed geometry (as a rule).

You could use the small compressor from an air horn setup and have it blow through a BOV instead of the horns, that could give you the 'special' effect you seek. :giggle:

not too tractory? thats my only concern.

Not in the car, i dont mind it on tick over either when i hear it. Some have said its abit tractory when i have been just creeping along in like a multi story carpark echoing. When it hits boost it sounds great i find, nothing like any petrol i have owned and i love it for that.

I would deffinatly go for the piper if you like the sound ill try get a quick video for you tomorrow, it's more of like a beefy gurgley roar when accelerating once It hits about 2000rpm love it me :) :)

I cant answer that really sorry as I have never had just the piper rear. I had a mufflerectomy before but standard bore and I couldn't really hear it inside the car when on full chat. My system now is pretty quite when cruising and then transforms on full throttle. All petrol cars I have had with loud exhausts have all been horrible and droany when just cruising at 50 in 5th.

Yeah I've had a few petrols even worse when your on a motorway dooing 70 for 200mile it's never ending :( totally agree with the quietness whilst driving along until you give it the beans :p by any chance you don't know the thickness of the standard down pipe as I think I'm just going to cut my cat out and weld a piece of pipe in

2.25inch outside diameter im 99% sure.

I'm going to have to go to piper tomorrow aren't I..

Can you confirm that it's not too much to live with? It's alright on motorway trips?

Is my missus going to moan?!

My misses moans but not in a good way but not about the exhaust either. I use my car daily on the m4 and it fine, radio on mid volume and cant hear a thing. You get a small drone if rolling down a hill but the slightest touch on the throttle not enough to change speed but it takes it away if you dont like it but I dont hear it unless I have the radio off when I dont feel like music.
