Car doesnt feel right

Featured Replies

read a thread on here about a car that was jerky before, and mine is like that, but also its vibrating quite a lot too, on idle it feels more like a diesel than a petrol, proper shakes. and when I pull away its like the rear passenger side shudders, going slow in 1st and second mainly its quite jerky, (wife calls it the kangaroo) I changed sparked plugs had coil packs changed and cleaned the throttle body all within the last few months, and it passed its MOT with no advisories last month,

When I had my clutch changed to a single flywheel last month I checked the dog bone mount and that was pretty solid,

I had the tracking done but it still leans to the left a little so have to always hold the wheel straight,

I will be changing my fuel filter as I have no paper work for when that was last done, so just want to rule that out for the hesitation, (my guess would be MAF after this if it doesnt cure the jerkyness)

but not sure what to check for the rest of the problems, I have had a quick look at the shocks and there is nothing that I have noticed but then I'm far from a ,mechanic,

any suggestions ?

Try unplugging the maf and see if it's smoother, it will bring some lights on the dash but I think they go out after a few cycles. Also have you tried shaking the engine to see if the engine mounts are worn?

I will try the maf tomorrow on the way to work,

I havent tried shaking the engine no, just grab hold of it and shake it or is there anywhere specific you would recommend rocking it from ?

Some split vacuum / breather pipework?

  • Author

I had a smoke test done, just after my MOT and there was a split, but I got that fixed, i have changed some of the pipes lately to silicone ones aswell, so I will double check they are all on secure, and if running without the MAF attached and a new fuel filter doesn't find a fault I will get it smoke tested again and see if that shows anything..

Breather pipes under the intake manifold?

Yeh just grab and shake and see if there's too much movement

they wasnt showing any smoke when I had it smoke tested before but I guess they could of gone since then, I have got the pipe work to bypass the pipes under the manifold, but been putting it off incase I do more damage than good, and it seems every garage i mention changing it, only want to replace it with whats already there... but will have a check and see if i can see anything down there tomorrow,

ok will give it a good rocking tomorrow and see if it moves much..

I know it sounds daft but try cleaning the earth cable up on the engine and the under battery box as i noticed mine had developed at judder on idle and not so long after battery died,

VRS's only have like a single lead that does engine and body which i thinks abit crap but i cleaned mine up and replaced battery as it refused to start car and its been fine since,

Also noticed same thing with g/f's dads peugeot camper van, earth lead on gearbox corroded away and engine was juddering like mad, new cable and it runs alot smoother now

I did have a battery fault on my shark tuning box thing, I thought it was from when my battery broke down and code hadnt been reset, but I have also noticed randomly that clock changes time, hasnt done it for the last week, but wonder if thats connected..

will certainly have a look at it, is it easy to get at to have a look at ?

I'd also suggest you check the Coolant Temp Sensor on VCDS if unplugging the MAF doesn't make any difference.

I'd also suggest you check the Coolant Temp Sensor on VCDS if unplugging the MAF doesn't make any difference.

so am I looking for it to behave the same with the MAF unplugged better or worse ?

and if the above doesnt work I will have a search and see if anyone local has VCDS,

If it runs better without the MAF it's goosed. Only fit a genuine VAG MAF, & the same goes for all the engine sensors. Aftermarket sensors for VAG cars rarely work correctly or for long.

if the MAF is gone I was looking at this as a replacement,. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Octavia-Variant2-Bosch-Air-Mass-Meter-Sensor-MAF-Genuine-Replacement-/390531291143?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AOctavia|Cars+Type%3ARS+1.8+T&hash=item5aed7a9807

they are slightly cheaper at carparts4less but requires me sending in the old one, and it says they are reconditioned units which always makes me a bit wary

TPS or main dealer. I wouldn't buy any aftermarket sensors. Buy cheap buy twice is most peoples experience especially with MAF's.

Last one I bought from TPS cost about £70 exchange.

I thought Bosch was advised to buy thats why I looked for a Bosch one..

my local TPS is 25 miles away, so will phone the local VW dealers tomorrow and see how much they charge, but according to etka its about £120

Reading their negative feedback I wouldn't trust that seller, could be a copy or refurbished part

I went with the Carparts4less one that was mention on another thread on here, was cheaper and came with a free gift..

cars just had tracking done (well sort of) and fuel filter has been changed, the mechanic says he cant feel or hear the vibration that I'm talking about, he said he checked all the bushes and the shocks and couldnt find anything wrong, but driving home there was still a vibration...

he did say my tracking was that badly out that he says I need to get it on somewhere that has the 4 wheel geometry as he couldnt get it perfect.. Although it now drives straight could the geometry being out cause vibration,

failing that does anyone know any vag speciliasts or anyone I could take it to in the North East that could have a look over it for me, as I am certain its not right..

Other than front toe angle, there's not a whole lot that's adjustable on this platform.

You can't even AFAIK get cam bolts for the front to adjust front camber, although you can get rear toe/camber shims for under the stub axles but that will depend on the torsion beam being straight.

Ok. So you've changed the MAF, coil pack, sparks, and cleaned the throttle body.

Are you sure the throttle body isn't goosed?

Does it only do this from cold? Coolant Temp Sensor?

Could also be the G28 sensor or the G40 sensor...

...Have you had VCDS on it?

Maf will be changed tomorrow or Monday when it arrives, coil packs done under warranty in the last 2 months, spark plugs changed in the last month, throttle body cleaned about 2-3 months ago, will give it another clean next time im out there, I have a spare gasket for it too,

I couldnt tell you to be honest,

nope does it when warm too, although it wasn't as bad today as it has been, (that was jerkiness) and its been pretty warm today.. But had the father inlaw in the car today and he said he could hear the vibration I am talking about, so at least I'm not imagining it, I have been thinking about changing the temp sensor anyway just to rule it out, as its been mentioned a few times, from what I have seen they are about £25ish quid for a bosch genuine one, and if im not mistaken I should be able to change it myself (non mechanically minded)

I will have a google into these a bit more, always good to have more places to look

Not yet, I have the fault code from my Shark STS box, and that says everything is fine, but havent found any one local with VCDS yet,
