Airbag warning light

Featured Replies

Evening all. I took the glove box out to route an AUX cable into the side of the glove box. Next time I drove the car I noticed the airbag symbol on the dashpod had lit up and the "AIRBAG OFF" light flashing on the centre console. B@lls - I forgot to reattach the cable for the airbag switch in the glove box. So I took it all apart again, connected the airbag switch and now the light on the centre console is fine but the symbol on the dash comes on for 4 seconds (as described in the in the manual, page 34), goes out for about a second, then comes back on and stays on.

Have I forgotten something, or is this an error message that needs to be cleared by VCDS? I didn't find any threads describing this, but wondering if leaving the connector unplugged and starting the car is not the same as if I had just turned the airbag switch off and on again, hence the persistent error light?

AFAIK an airbag fault has to be cleared with VCDS. Simply fixing the fault won't clear the warning when it comes to airbags.

For future reference, if you are doing any work that involves disconnecting airbags it's worth disconnecting the battery first.....that way no faults will be stored.....as long as you fully reconnect the airbags before reconnecting the battery.

Yeah, it's a fair point. I thought it was just a passenger airbag deactivation and not part of the same error reporting that the driver's side is subject to. So just to clear this up, the glove box switch controls both passenger and driver airbags? If the switch is used as intended (i.e. numpty here doesn't disconnect it without the battery as well), it shouldn't create a permanent warning when toggle off and on?

Cheers

The switch in the glove box only switches off the passenger front and side airbag. It has no effect on the drivers airbag.

It does not produce a permanent warning when used to turn off the passenger airbags. I assume the airbag control module picked up that there was an open circuit in the glove box switch when you forgot to reconnect it......a VCDS scan will show what fault it recorded.
