Tow bar fitting

Featured Replies

Any tips on fitting 1 to a mk1 vrs? Does the bumper need to come off etc

Yes as you need to replace the crashbar.

Here is mine on my TDI (under he watchful eye of the collie);

Unless you are fitting a swan-neck you will also need to make a nick in the underside of the bumper too:

The standard crashbar looks like this:

Cheers. I'll give it ago when weather gets better. Looks like a pain !

Bumper off, crash bar off,

fit towbar and wiring through gromit into car and then refit bumper,

fun bits wiring electrics up, finding out what does what etc, I fitted mine and used a bypass relay box so also had to run a power supply for it from fuse box at front of car behind headlight switch

Fitting is easy. 6 nuts to remove the old crash bar and 2 bolts per side (iirc) to secure the new crash bar.

Did the tow bar it's self in 30 mins inc cutting the bottom of the bumper lol. It's easy

So I've got the bumper off and old crash bar off. The tow bar doesn't line up to the studs the old crash bar fitted on. The tow bar also has 2 legs bolted on which slide in the 2 gaps in the car but again there is no where to bolt it up. Unless I was to drill in to the car! Any ideas

There's holes in the chassis rails, covered with seam sealer, poke it with a screw driver to find them

I've just purchased a towbar (and fitting) from Towsure... BUT despite the towbar arriving yesterday the fitters can't do until end of June - Towsure now use a subcontracted mobile fitting service. So I cancelled the fitting and I should be getting a refund - but so far no confirmation so I think another phone call is in order.  I'm glad I found this thread and I'll attempt to do it myself with a borrowed torque wrench.
Is there a thread for how to take the bumper off too? And any tips for connecting the wiring? I've got those clips to connect to existing wires.. and an audible monitor thingy in the kit.

Took me 3 hours you need the wiring diagram , the Haynes one is complex I found . Someone up above said they did this in 30 mins , I do not believe them .

This should fill in the gaps for the bumper assuming you have a hatchback -
