About to buy used 170 yeti with high mileage - anything to look out for?

Featured Replies

Hi to all,

About to trade in my mitsubishi lancer for a used 170bhp diesel Yeti with high mileage... (59,000 miles - the only way I can afford one!)

Is there anything I should be looking out for or wary of? Anything I should check hasnt got problems? It is an elegance version, 2011 reg (11), with no added extras apart from metallic paint!

Dealer is giving me a 1 yr (no mileage restriction) warranty and a years breakdown cover.

Thanks!

BTW - aware of a possible cambelt needing changing as mentioned in the "new forum intro" area.

59000? Just about 'run in' then. Should be great (54k miles and counting on mine).

If this is from a Skoda Dealership,

i would be looking to Pay Extra and Buy an Extended Warranty at the Time of purchase.

If not at a Skoda Dealership.

If the car has the remainder of the Skoda Warranty on it,

who is the 1 year 'Warranty' from the Dealer being Underwritten by, which company.?

george

At that age, shouldn't it have 1 year warranty with Skoda anyway? As for high mileage, my Octavia was bought with 90k on it :)

I would get it on a ramp and check underneath for any off roading knocks apart from that if it's with a dealer fine, also check any recalls were done there will be info on the forum about any that might be worth checking. With 59k there should be plenty of life in it still!

Thanks guys - great comments - will check regarding the extended warranty and the one offered for a year.

Managed to get front and rear mudflaps, interior mats, one yr car tax, full tank of diesel and a spare wheel kit thrown in :) Should be able to collect in 3 weeks time.

Very happy lass.

Welcome. I was only talking to someone on the dog and bone last night who did exactly the same thing :giggle:

Your car seems to be remarkably similar to mine apart from one or two things.

Things to look for would be small clear film covers on the lower doors to to protect them from stone chips. Check that you have the correct locking wheel bolt key (I didn't and only found out when the tyre man turned up at work to fit my winters and looked like a right daft cheese) you should also have a small 'U' shaped tool to remove the wheel bolt covers.

Check you have the tyre inflater kit inside its best before date that includes a compressor.

In maxidot (dealer should explain this when you pick up the car) you can see if its on flexible or fixed servicing. If you can see the oil temp then it will likely be on variable which may be better for higher milage drivers.

Skodas come with a small zip up tool case, I'll have to look in the boot of mine to check the contents.

Post some pics when you pick up the snow monster.

Thanks Hairball. How spooky is that! Same conversation in two days!

I've checked that it has film on the wheel arches... it does ... and I shall get them to demo how to take off the wheel nuts on the day of collection (and the jack etc). Will also check the best before date then too for the inflator thingmajob.

It will have the full toolcase too...

Discussion regarding servicing happening in an hours time for service plans, GAP insurance and all the other bits and bobs I tend to add on.

Recalls will all be checked with a multi-point vehicle check, and they are confirming whether the cambelt is good until 120,000 miles else changing it for me.

Brilliant information on the forums guys! Thank you

Thanks for the vosa link just checked only one recall on early cars so that's good.

As the above posts say, seems good. 170 engine is well powerful and, given regular servicing, should be tood for up to 150,000 miles. Also as above, try to get cam belt changed within the price and get documentation to prove that it's been done!

Wish I could afford 170, have just ordered 1.2 petrol Elegance - will be sufficient for my needs and annual mileage. Report back soon on BRISKODA, join the forum ( 12 pounds well spent ) and ask any questions 'cos you'll get helpful answers.

The main thing I'd look out for is that it's priced sensibly.

The facelifted Yeti is due out in around 6 months or so, which will effect prices of the current shape a bit.

If the price is good then I can't see any issues.

the 170 seems quite strong.

If it's done a lot of town work you may get DPF or DMF issues at some stage, but that's about it.

DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter.

DMF - Dual Mass Flywheel, sometimes changed with the clutch which adds a few hundred pounds to the bill.

A very good point BossFox but with 59K on the clock that would have to have been a taxi for that many town miles. Strangely I've not seen any Yeti taxis.

There are a few, but as you say they are rare and even more unlikely to be the 170 engine.

Taxi drivers generally go for the Greenline or 2.0 diesel front wheel drive, but notice how much cheaper the Octavia is (Cabbie's favorite) and buy that instead. :D

No. It is nearly out of original warranty.

First 2 yrs are unlimited miles, but 3rd year is up to 60k only

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for all your help. I have brought Vin home on Saturday and he is a welcome addition to the household!

May you have many happy miles together

You forgot the pics! :D

They're in my profile :)

My Yeti has done more miles than that, it has had mediocre leaseplan servicing too and to be totally honest, I would buy it. Currently sitting with 80K+ miles on it, it drives well and gets used probably more so than your average family car.

Of you... not the car!

Congratulations Blackcatgirl, once again we have the same model and colour car! It looks oddly familiar to Jana apart from the roof :giggle:

I gather that you have now become acquainted with Vin?

Please post your thoughts on the change from the Mitsubishi (assuming that you have stopped grinning from exposure to the new Yeti... no you won't stop grinning if it's anything like most on here)

Hi Hairball,

I have now become acquainted with Vin the Yeti ... and have had time to reflect before attempting to answer your complex question!! Tsk - it’s like comparing a Belgian bun to a Lasagne!

Thoughts on my old Mitsubishi Lancer (2L diesel GS3)

Pros...

  • Nice aggressive hot look which catches people’s eyes (especially those who don’t realise that it was not a monstrous Evo!)... I certainly drooled and dribbled when I first saw one.
  • Practical and cheap to buy/run – I hammered the 0-60 in 9.5 seconds... drove like a nutter (in order to attempt to get some sort of thrill)... and still got about 45mpg out of it.
  • Generous equipment list for a cheap price-tag used
  • Lots of controls ... active stability control, active traction control, cruise control...

Cons...

  • Performance was quite bland and struggled to deliver any real thrills on the road – apart from fighting torque steer in 1st or 2nd gear when legging it away from traffic lights!
  • Bouncing up and down over potholes and bumps wasn’t great ... with my ‘girls’ I was lucky not to get black eyes!
  • Getting into the low car my butt uncomfortably landed on the side of the seat - central area where the handbrake was - on a number of occasions. This gave a few rather odd bruises... bit like I’d been paintballing and had my butt and thighs as target practice!
  • Rear spoiler made reversing a nightmare – and visibility for BMWs approaching in outside lanes of motorways until it was too late to leave them in my wake.
  • Seatbelt alarm was as annoying as they come

Thoughts on Vin the Yeti (170 2L diesel)... so far...

Pros...

  • Speed bumps (and the fear of black eyes – see above) are now a thing of the past!
  • Comfortable cruising along motorways in 6th gear
  • Traffic light Grand Prix starts are easily wont against most chavved up blingmobiles.
  • Loving the hooks to hang shopping bags on too (saddo). Means my delicate puddings purchased from lovely bakeries wont get crushed by bottles of sloe gin obtained from other establishments in a demolition derby in my boot!
  • Extensive standard equipment – stuffed with stuff - when I can work out how to use them...
  • Not a drool-worthy look, but it’s a quirky “dinky SUV” (not in a bonkers Roomster way), which gives a dribble-worthy big-grinning punchy grunt of a drive and highly entertaining.
  • Arriving in bends a little too “aggressive” (the Yeti somehow encourages me to push it harder than maybe I should!) leaves me grinning with the 'interesting' understeer and a bit of rear end experience... as it were...
  • Girly comment – I like the green backlighting (not the orangey-red vileness seen in other cars)!

Cons...

  • Expensive to buy and was extremely difficult to find a used one for sale because they are cracking cars!
  • Still getting to grips with all the menu options and customisations that I can do ... the naming of some of them leaves a lot to be desired which resorts to having to read the manual and google online to find out how to setup various things! It’s not easy to find the knob or button that does the action you want... let alone when driving along. Having managed to accidentally heat the car to that of a Turkish brothel, set the heated heat to the “on” position on the only day of summer we have had this year, and then accidentally dial my mother on my mobile phone (instead of changing radio stations) ... I shake my head in dismay at Skoda designers!
  • Having to learn how to ‘calm down dear’ in order to reach 40mpg... Might remove the rear seats as they are flipping heavy... !
  • Don’t like the reflection in the windscreen of the dashboard grills/vents.

Can’t wait to get it off-road and off to festivals / weekends away and find out what it really can do in the wilderness...
