Erratic Idicators - Octy vRS

Featured Replies

Best way I can describe it. The indicators are flashing at erratic intevals. Is it a known fault? Could it be a relay or the flasher unit? The relay sounds as though its behind the centre air vent is it an easy fix.

Thanks for any advice

Rich

i think the flasher unit is actually combined in the hazard button.

are they just flashing fast?? if so are you sure you haven't got a bulb gone?

Nah, unfortunately not, its intermittently quick then slow then quick again. The relay is clicking in time with the arrow on the dash and the indicators themselves. Sounds like a flasher unit I think but Ill take advice on it.

Thanks

Rich

maybe a dodgy connection on one of the bulbs

mabe next time it plays up you could have a quick look round to see if any aren't working.

Its doing it all the time, when I say erratic I mean erratic flash but every time I indicate be it left or right (not sure about the hazards Ill check em)

I guess it could be a duff bulb contact somewhere which is dragging the flasher unit down, but if it does it in both directions, surely that would require a bulb on each side to be dodgy? Ill see if there is one intermittently out, otherwise, I think Im into tracing a dreaded earth fault.

Thanks and rgds

Rich

It will be the flasher unit which is part of the hazard switch, had one in last Friday with the same problem.

Ah cool, can you remember how much the part is? It should be a warrenty job I guess so Ill probably bundle it off to the dealer.

Thanks and Rgds

Richie

Yep, that will be a warranty job. I have seen a few simillar posts in the past so it must be a common problem.

My Octy 1.8T does this sometimes too. Was a problem a couple of weeks back but seems to have stopped now. I'm not too worried but next time it's in for a service I'll get them to check it.

I had this problem with my old Octy RS. The flasher unit was replaced in 5 mins under warranty, and I got the impression from the dealer that it was a well known fault.

Yes - these flasher units seem to be crap quality - got the same problem on my car.

Removed the unit and cleaned the contacts with fine 'wet and dry' paper. It's better but not perfect.

New part is about

mum had that on her old octy, must be common problem

mine too! Again a known fault and replaced within seconds

Mine did it, and 2 friends with Skodas also had the problem.

I fixed mine by opening up the relay (hazard switch) and cleaning all the contacts. It has not double-clicked or slow-clicked a SINGLE time since.

I think it costs approx 30 pounds to replace the switch.

Coworker who changed his switch November last year, the replacement is giving the same problem again!

Do a search for "indicator relay" and you'll find my post where I describe how to clean the contacts.
