My wife mentioned a funny noise from the engine today and sure enough the belt damper was flailing about on the top pulley. Do not know how long its has been like that! Any way a passing mechanic who seemed pretty switched on suggested that a lot of vehicles fitted with this type of engine have had the damper removed and his recommendation was to removed the flailing damper and shut the bonnet. Obviously not the best engineering solution but what is anyone's experience? If I did want to do the job properly what is the part I need something link this http://www.eurocarpa...46ea58e&000112. Vehicle is a 1.9 octavia SLX tdi 110.

What's the process for testing the alternator pulley? Do I need to take the belt off presumably? Then try to spin it both ways?

Leave the belt on. With a small screwdriver, push on the alternator fan blades. It should only turn one way.

Which end of the alternator has fan blades ? I can only see a plastic cap on one end covering the spline drive. Are the fan blades on the other end? Do you need to remove the tensioner to do this? Is the car jacked up?
