Funny noise from 16V 1.4 Fabia

Featured Replies

Our 16V 1.4 makes a weird sort of "flacky - flacky - flacky" sound on idle. Sorry about the odd description! It's done this since new, only 2,000 miles now.

I goes as the revs are raised and the dealer says it's just normal but it is quite distinct above all other engine sounds.

Has anyone got a 16V 1.4 and does it make the same noise?

Thanks

Norry.

Hello Norry, just need you to expand a bit on this noise please. Is it worse when the engine is hot or cold? When you place your foot on the clutch in neutral with the engine idling, and push down, does the noise go away? Is the engine power output smooth, no misfiring or jerkiness? Is the idle speed stable or does it fluctuate slightly with the "Flackety...Flacky sound even by a little? Any chance you can post a sound file somewhere?

To be honest, the 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines are mechanically very quiet...normally! But sometimes there are things that can make some noise that will draw your attention. Without knowing anything further I'd hazard a guess and say you may have a gasket leak on the inlet or exhaust manifold. Or maybe a very slight leak on the exhaust system itself up near the front somewhere, but only very slight or othewise you would notice it all the time. It could be a noisy injector (but they normally click loudly at idle) or the airbox seal may be loose and not sealing properly. It does not sound as if it's the hydraulic tappets as they make a very loud rattle and tapping sound if one of them is failing.

Come back with as much info as possible if you can, answering the questions above as well as you can please.

I am a fairly experienced car owner and I cannot identify the sound's source. It is heard when the engine is warm and it comes from the belt end of the engine but doesn't sound like a belt! I have listened carefully at that side and cannot identify the source. I am sure it's not the exhaust or the tappets or the injectors. It is a sound I have not heard before.

The car performs perfectly at all engine speeds with good fuel consumption.

I just wondered if there are any owners of the same model that can say "Oh! Yes, they all do that" or "No, that's odd". The dealer's technician just dismissed it as a normal engine sound but it isn't, in my experience. It can be heard from about 15 feet away when the engine is idling.

No body has any experience of the 16V 1.4 ?

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi,

My car (Fabia 2 '08 estate 16V 1.4) has started making a noise in idle. I took it to my local garage and he said its normal don't worry; but I do worry!

Its got about 62K miles on it, I've had the cam belt changed a few months ago. The noise only started a few weeks ago.

It's only when the engine is warm. I only do 40 motorway miles a day so have very little time idling in traffic. I think it would worry me more if I spent a lot of time in traffic queues.

I went to London last week, but after 3 hours on the motorway it sounded the same as usual when I got home, no worse.

I thought it may be the water pump as this could have been done at the 60K service when i had the cambelt done. The garage said the water pump was ok though.

Keep us posted!

It is still making the same noise - slightly louder if anything - dealer says it's not a problem but it is annoying me.  I am still looking for others with the same prob'.  Any more suggestions anybody?

Thanks

Norry.

Can you record a clip and put it on youtube - linking it here?

Im no mechanic, although someone else might be able to advise.
