Hammerite - Any good?

Featured Replies

A quick question, as per the title really; I want to use it to paint some bits of car that aren't visible to the eye but get subject to a lot of hidden abuse. Obviously I want the best for rust prevention - is this stuff as good as it suggests or is there better brush applied paints on the market?

Thanks.

I presume you mean wax-oil (Which now appears under the Hammerite brand) as opposed to Hammerite paint - two different things !

Haven't used wax oil myself, but my Fabia shows signs that something similar has been used by Skoda in the manufacturing process on the inner surface of the doors. To that extent, a word of warning, its got a low melting point and after a hot day in the sun, it melts and runs out if the drain holes in the doors of my car. So, perhaps, if your're thinking of doing the underside, I'd keep it away from the exhaust and silencers.

You'd need to treat any rusted areas appropriately i.e. D-rust or welding befire applying it.

My Fabia has undertray treatment as part of the manufacturing and it shouldn't need re-doing in its lifetime

Go to a trade paint shop, they always have paints that are better than you can buy in DIY places.

I got some container paint off ebay, appears same sort of stuff as hammerite but half the price as i dont think hammerites as good as it used to be

Hi Skodanorman, I've been quite impressed with the Hammerite 3 in 1 application, rust treatment/primer/basecoat. Has taken well on the pick up & a lot less porous than conventional primer. Always found paint applications good for gates, garage door etc! ;)

I've been using both, under their original separate product names for over 40 years now.

If you mean you want a sort of "armour paint", then yes Hammerite is excellent.

Waxoyl is probably the best DIY rust protection on the market, although the main underbody may need recoating very couple of years.
