A mass pilgrimage to the Nurburgring?

Not me.

Edit: just to clarify = young family + time away + being overtaken by loads of loony europeans on a long technical track I don't know and can't get insured on.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd do it combined with a F1 GP Weekend :).

I think I saw some news piece about Ze Ring being put up for sale now or something ?

That's been going on and off for a while.

I'd want to be insured if I went on the Ring

Any conclusions yet? I am asking as we have a long standing plan with "nissan370z" Mark to go to the German F1 GP and do the Ring at the same time. I will try a nosey around the net to see if any more info available

How did he/she m,anaged to do that??? Was he travelling at 200 mph or too busy doing something else ? ;):D

No idea but if there's idiots on there like this who think they can translate laps on GT5 to reality I'd have to be insured if I went on. Last I heard Armco was around 1200 euro a metre.

If ARMCO is the only concern I could probably sort out a trailer full of it just in case :D. But you are right, it is called Green Hell for a reason and without insurance I'd not be going.

So there's nobody insuring Ze Ring now?

Not sure if i would do the touristenfahrt under UK insurance. When i lived in Moenchongladbach, a mere 92 mile from the ring  I used to pop down around twice a month, but I was lucky that German insurance classify the ring as a toll road so its completely covered under the policy and normal road rules applied.

The price hasn't gone up much IMO. I last went 2009 and it was 22 Euro/lap. An increase of 4 euro seems OK to me.

In a full day there i tended to only do around 10 laps which IMO is more than ample, which just so happened to coincide with me requiring a fuel run. I always thumbed lift around there in other peoples exotic machinery as well, so in a day your looking at maybe taking part in around 20 laps which is ample fr a day out.

If/when i go again, I will be doing it as part of a package on a closed trackday. Spend a day at Le Mans, a day at Spa Francochamps, then a day at the ring when they link the north and south loops together. I know a few who have done this and its the future. 16 or so miles of track to share with a handful of other drivers.

That sounds good but am I right in thinking that would set you back by a cool grand?

yeah, plus tyres plus fuel etc lol.

Its a once in a life time thing though. Better than spending the week in spain etc.

Only worht doing if you trailer your car though just in case, god forbid you prang it.

I think The Green Hell is one of those events every petrol head worth his/her salt should at least once in their lives attempt.

I wonder if it would be a problem to get a German insurer to insure an UK car just for Ze Ring... ? I bet they are less skiddish than UK lot!

If (a big IF) I sort out my FIA license I will be able to tag along with my brother in law to one of his races in Europe so he could give me a go in his pocket monster in a test driver capacity - would be nice to hoon around Spa for zilch :D.

You would need a german address to register the car and insurance.

That is not a problem. Thing is, can one car be registered in two countries at the same time? Also, how much would the whole thing cost? Is all of that worth it as I have no clue how much insuring vRS for Ze Ring in UK would actually cost... Seems like a long shot

My insurance company states on my policy that driving around he ring will void any insurance cover.

Interesting choice of words there, so are they just saying no cover in force when at the ring, or if they findout you have driven around the ring at any point during the time you were insured, your insurance isn't valid and therefore no claims will be met ?

Look here, seems like renting a ring prepped car is a great value for money and you get to drive a different car as well :)

And we all know a rental is the fastest car in the world. Both the BRZ and Swift Sports's look great!

Ive driven the Swift stage 2 around there and its an absolute hoot. SLOOOOOOW on the straights, but hilarious in thee bends.

I also recommend getting a cabby in the Ring Tax as a group. Its costed per car, so whether there is one passenger or three the price doesnt change, obviously better to split three ways. I luckily got talking with two dutch guys who were trying to find a third passenger to save money. That was about 9 minutes of thinking I was going to die the whole time lol.

Ha! Nothing perks you up more than thinking you are bout to pop the clogs any second :)

Just got it confirmed, driving to Nurburgring for this event http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/events/oldtimer/adac-eifel-race-for-the-jan-wellem-cup.html (pic 2 shows the cars I am involved with)

Alfa Romeo 2000GTV  -

- at 3.06 with two blue stripes  kicking Porches' derriere!

That's with all areas full access... *drool*

If time allows and it is possible I will rent some local wheels for the Green Hell as well!
