Upgrading Speakers

Featured Replies

The front speaker in the passenger side door is starting to get distorted especially if I crank up the bass a bit so was looking to upgrade both the front speakers. Also thinking of upgrading the rear speakers. Any suggestions on both?

I've been looking at pioneer and kenwood which come with pod adaptors and are a decent rating for a decent price but i'm wondering if anybody else has upgraded their speakers and what they've upgraded to?

I'm in the process of doing this, one of the previous owners has put Golf MK4 speaker adapters in which now makes the speakers touch the door card. So I've ordered some 36mm deep MDF rings to swap them out along with some sound deadening for the doors too, any half decent components will sound good if powered by an amp and a decent head unit.

Good luck!

I fitted some Hertz to my car which I'd highly recommend. Check mounting depths though as they caused me some issues in that respect.

Hertz all the way!!

I have the same config. The MK4 adapters work well but the doorcard bends around the chassis of the speakers. A spot of self adhesive draught excluder or similar keeps it off the cone and from vibrating. Not sure if this is OEM foam or something added when the speakers were installed. On the flip side, my speakers at 62mm deep already sit on the window guide behind the carrier. So not a lot of room to manoeuvre short of getting shallower speakers or chopping and reworking the door card to space the speaker grille further out.

@the OP,

I wouldn't bother with the rears. They're tiny and mounted into flimsy plastic supports. Anything more meaty will probably buzz and/or sound crap anyway. Even mounting bigger speakers into a solid parcel shelf is questionable, as the same flimsy side supports that hold the OEM rear speakers also hold up the parcel shelf. If you're a dab hand at carpentry and have the time to spare however....

For the fronts, install at least a 2x100 amp, ideally something approaching 2x150... I have a genesis profile 2 and it's adequate but I'd prefer more!

Front speakers: Pick components with a mounting depth of 60mm or less. Ideally something well reviewed and with a high sensitivity.

Head unit: Something with a decent tweakable EQ. Main failing of the Symphony IMO is it's basic treble/bass EQ.

Could someone recommend?

Rear speakers will destroy your sound-stage and are not necessary. Save your money.

Still any recommendations and sizes?

There are OEM Blaupunkt ones on ebay for about £25 a pair.

They are supplied with cables long enough to go all the way to

the head unit. The rears are 100mm in a square mount. (4 inches)

These should suit the front. The size is 6.5 inches

I'd disconnect the tweeters in the rear doors personally as the rear speakers linked have them built

in whereas the original ones don't.

Yep rear speakers are only really there for the benefit of your backseat passengers. If you can hear them, then as above, it mucks the soundstage up. The exception to this is a subwoofer. Due to the nature of human hearing, it is not possible to localise bass sounds, so a subwoofer in the boot isn't an issue.

Do you have any doors at home that won't stay open on their own?

I would recommend you use your rear speakers as door stops as they sure as hell won't improve the sound in your car.

Genuinely interested to know, but why do Bose fit speakers all over the place in

cars like mine then? I have about 10 in my motor (9 and a sub)

Probably to charge you more for the privilege :^) Note that the sound localisation issue is why the tweeter component of speakers are installed higher up/about ear level as it puts the soundstage there.

Rear passengers? From memory, of the 9 BOSE speakers in my RX-8 only 2 were in the rear (parcel shelf). The rest were in the front doors/door pillars and the dash panel itself.

In theory "proper" sound in a car is delivered by more than 2 loudspeakers.

1 x (woofer and tweeter per person (4 peeps). = 8 speakers

1 x subwoofer

1 x front central speaker.

In the good/bad old days getting that lot to sound 1/2 way decent was a question of carefully tweaking EQs and levels to accentuate the positives and reduce any negatives. Add in everything done in analogue and noise floor of the equipment could be significant.

Modern purpose designed systems use computer modelling to get the best price/location/sound compromise and use digital sound processors in the car to set timing and level info for in some cases each individual speaker cone. I s'pose the key accronym is DTA - digital time alignment.

...that the person driving an old eScrote Popular would turn green over.... That having one solitary speaker on the central dash. :)

I had those mk4 golf adapters in mine... Easy to fix, couple of self tapper on the bottom corner too act as a spacer and leave the speaker room to move.. Works great as you can (with a bit of jiggery pokery) get the required spacing to with in millimetres.

I had to do it on mine as the previous owner was the installer of the system (I later found out to be £300 worth of Focal's that sounded, ahem, like poo in the Fabia door)... Thing is, he'd managed to advance the ageing of one by leaving it to hit the door card, as a result, the coil had got weak and even the slightest resistance to movement made it fart... The screws fixed it for the most part, but can't seeing it lasting that long (sorry next owner)..

@ vindaloo

I have that setup in my Audi van :p

Dash speaker in middle, sub in luggage compartment, and a speaker and tweeeter

for each seat. In mine they are controlled by a microphone in the car which measures

ambient sound and increases/decreases volume to suit. It annoyed me at first as you can't

turn it off but I'm used to it now.

Sorry to hijack this tread but my drivers door speak is farting something chronic. Ive been reading loads and everyone keeps saying Hertz speakers and the ones.

Can someone tell me exactly what ones to get for the front. The one thing i will say is that I will not be running an amp. Can i still have component speaks without an amp?

Thanks

Have you got the standard HU? Most aftermarket ones come with amps (normally up to 50watts) built in.

My understanding is that they will work off the stock, non-amped source, but might not sound great as they'll be underpowered.

I got an Alpine IDA X305s . I just like the fact i dont need a single cd in the car.

So far as I am aware, no Hertz ones are available that will fit easily without lots of fettling and/or door card modification.

Had a bash at fitting some speakers this weekend due to the OEM ones blowing up. I used the Golf MK4 speaker adapters and some 6.5" Fli speakers I had lying around until I can get some decent components, I used an old cork as spacers from the door card which works well as there are no more rattles. Along with some sound deadening it worked a treat!
