Sound Deadening of my Black Octavia Estate MK1 ... Tecsound & Dynamat

Featured Replies

Hello people,

Even that I am on this forum for sometime I didn't actually contribute to our Skoda community yet. Well, that's about to change.

I would like to share my experience (mainly by pictures) while doing THE sound deadening of my Octy MK1 Estate.

At the beginning I started with front doors >

Try to put as much as you can of Dynamat on the outer panel of the door

I was going to buy some MDF spacers for my speakers, but couldn't find any online so I have done this (pics below) and the result is great. I will try to get some MDF spacer rings in the future, hopefully (if I find some, or if someone know where to get them let me know!)

At this point I really thought that the job is done and didn't want to do anything else, I mean no more deadening. When I turned on the radio it was huge improvement compare to factory speakers. However couple of days later I could hear some rattling noise inside the door when playing some lower bass. So I was going to put some Dynamat on my door cards, but considering the cost I was looking for something less dreadful for my wallet. And I found Tecsound. Unfortunately you have to buy a whole roll of Tecsound which is 6x1.2m (7.2m sq.). There was an idea … Instead of doing just doors as planned I decided to do whole car.

After my roll of tecsound arrived I could start with the job ...

Doorcards were the first

Before I could even finish the job my Brand new heat gun gave up . (It lasted for about 20mins)

Week later I picked up the replacement and start doing the boot.

When I was almost done with the job, guess what ... the heat gun ... yes again ... this time it survived just over few hours :wall: .

I will throw an advice here: DO NOT BUY A "TITAN" HEAT GUN. It's a waste of money and time. My previous Bosch stayed with me for over 5 years until I end up loosing it when moving.

Here is almost finished boot

I hope that Screwfix is open tomorrow, because I want to get this done. This time I will definitely buy some other heat gun.

I have a dilemma now. Tecsound is brilliant material, but it smells quite badly. I would like to put another layer of something on the top of Tecsound just to seal any smells in future.

Could anyone help and give me some advice on what material (and where to buy it) to put on the top of this?

I am planning on covering whole floor with it, but before I can begin I need to know how to seal the smell.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Screwfix is always open to save you :)

How much was the roll of Tecsound?

Paid £76 for the roll and I think £18 was postage

I just finished the job in my boot and thinking about putting another layer of something over it. I may try the Dynapad or maybe Thinsulate (or maybe something else). I just didn't decide yet.

Any ideas?

Can you not seal it by painting something on it ?

Yeah, had the same idea, but what can you paint it with? I'll try to contact the company where I bought it from, we'll see what they gonna say about it.

Looks good ... However dynamats far to expensive for me ... I've used 3mm thick sheets made out of bitumen and some other compound for my doors I can't for the life of me remember the name but its brilliant heat up stick on when it's set it's rock solid and doesent peel off like dynamat on a hot day ... There's a few pictures in my gallery, and there's no smell

Couldn't you paint yours with Hammerite ?

Couldn't you paint yours with Hammerite ?

Somebody had a very same idea to use Hammerite on this. What worries me is that Hammerite will not stick to Tecsound properly and will start to peel off.

I might be wrong on this one ... would certainly try to paint over it. Have you tried to use Hammerite on something else than metal? And what were the results?

Ive used hammerite on all sorts to be honest it sticks to almost anything .. pvc glass metal etc either that or you could paint it with plastic primer that should work ...
