IP addresses

Featured Replies

following on from our earlier threads involving people with the same IP address, i'm not a total geek so don't fully understand IP's.

to have the same IP would they have to using the same computer or would the IP come from the router/switch, for example me and my bro are living at home and use different computers, we use a desktop and our own laptops between us but they all have the same IP?

the laptops connect wirelessly where the desktop is proper like if this makes any difference

The IP address briskoda or any other website would see would normally be your "external" or "public" IP, that is the one your ISP gives you for your connection. It won't be a 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x one

That IP address is also therefore "shared" between your PCs so from the outside world, we cannot tell which PC on your house it came from, but we can say it came from inside your house somewhere ;)

Well actually that's still not true - NTL uses proxy servers for example and a lot of software will return the IP of the proxy rather than the client one..

This, plus badly configured proxy servers that don't pass along the real IP (this applies to NTL, sometimes, although they've been sound for a few years since) can show say my IP to be that of the proxy server. If you then block the IP, you will block a whole bunch of users.

Annoying but true I'm afraid ;)

Could also be like the recent incidents your on about where people are on a Network using many PCs yet on the same site i.e. work place, school, college, hospital..... all PCs go through one server therefore 1 I.P. yet more than one computer.

Thats true, same with any workplace that has its own fixed external IP. When I access the site from work I am the only one on this IP address as no other user view the site, but if they did they would show the same IP as me. At home I connect through NTL so the site sees the ntl proxy server IP and this has many users on the same IP.
