Launch control - anyone heard of it?

Featured Replies

I've been fooling around with my ecu lately remapping my engine. I came across some code blocks for launch control. Essentially it bounces your revs at the limits you set and spools up the turbo pressure so when you dump the clutch you have a foot full of power from the word GO.

I'm not going to implement it. I don't drive like that in the Superb and it's basically a gimmick for boy racers and it's only real use is on track days and Santa Pod drag times. It's a Superb, not really a drag strip kind of car. I just wondered if anyone else has heard of it on the AWX engines?

As far as the remapping goes I'm currently running 171bhp, but probably going to knock it back down to 165, maybe 160bhp. I rarely use full throttle anytime, but if it's there then the temptation to use it is always looming I guess. I hear you can take the 130 AWX PD engines up to 180bhp with stock clutch and turbo, but it sounds like it'd push them to the limit. Not my thing really.

Yeah it's available in all edc15 ecu's or most anyway.

Ideally you want a nice smooth limiter so boost pressure can rise. If its bouncing then boost doesn't hold.

There's more to an ideal launch control setting than you seem to think; ideally it should give you about 8% wheelspin as you start moving, dropping to 0% by peak power revs in first, and shutting off in second.

The map used for "launch control" in the bosch edc15 ecu is simply a fuel/torque limiter based on speed.

And the award for the most patronising post in this thread goes to Ken. Congrats.

I was never under the impression it was a comprehensive launch control system, but I was semi-surprised to find it lurking there. Just wondered if anyone knew if it was a throw back from other cars sharing the same ecu family. As Faboka says, it doesn't appear to read anything from traction control sensors so it'll have zero idea about wheel slippage.

Incidentally Faboka, whereabouts in Merseyside are you man?

Prescot. See your in sunny Southport :) I travel there every day.

Is it yuor partner's time of the month or something? How was describing how a decent launch control shoud work less than useful? Certainly deliberatly editing your quote to try and make me look bad makes your post nothing short of offensive!

Really? Oh I'm sorry buddy. Nobody should have to come here everyday, not unless they've done something very, very bad.

Whoa, calm down there Tonto. It was a tongue in cheek comment. I thought your wording was funny. ... and I didn't edit anyone's post. Not mine, nor yours. I would ask if your partner is also on the rag ... assuming it's a woman. (Not being offensive, just politically correct. You never know these days do you? )

Have this up and running on my car as standard.

It's not 'proper' launch control but can be used as such.

The set threshold on mine is 4000rpm.

Really? I take it you disable it come MoT time? Wondering how your clutch is holding up too, assuming it's stock?

Not Skoda related, but I had launch control on my old Smart Roadster. With that and a healthy remap (which also improved the gear change lag) it was fun bit of kit and could beat most things off the mark. Shame it was such an unreliable, leaking piece of ****e!

I don't tend to spend all my time doing 4000rpm launches.

No real need to as I'm quicker than the vast majority of ordinary cars.

Why would I need to disable it for MOT? (Not that I can) it's as it left the factory.

It passed it's last MOT a couple of months back without any mention.

The guys on Audisport don't recommend launching everywhere you go because

it's a lot of strain on the clutch as you would have the quattro active on a fast

pull away at 4000 rpm. It's the same (and works best) on the S tronic models

so I've heard. I discovered it by accident as I was sitting on the drive revving away

trying to make the exhaust pop and bang LOL

Was thinking of the smoke test on diesels. They run the revs around 2500-3000rpm. Doesn't sound like it would affect your launch control settings given they only kick in at 4000rpm though. I was going to activate it on my car just to see what it did, but I'm highly unlikey to use it. If we're honest, I drive a huge, ugly, oil-burning Skoda .... my days of counting 0-60 times from the lights are probably behind me.

Speaking of cars nice Audi btw.

Mine just gets going at 4k, the fabia vRS it replaced was just running out of steam

at the same revs. I've got to say that although it's more expensive to run and whatnot,

I have really missed petrol engined cars.

You and me both. I went from a really smooth 3.0 V6, to something that genuinely sounds like a Series III Land Rover.

Nah, you want to know the engine is working! At least the cyclists can hear you coming...!

... it's nice when little kids don't burst into tears wondering what that thunderous noise is though.
