West cumbria - lack of V power or Tesco momentum for vrs

Featured Replies

Have recently bought a fabia vrs and now realise that my local Tesco superstore in Whitehaven does NOT sell momentum 99 Ron

Next nearest source of 98 Ron or better ? - believe it is Carlisle or Barrow for v power which are both a considerable distance

Reason for posting is to let west Cumbrians know that I am pestering Tesco with ferocity and will not give up until they do sell momentum.

Or am I being too fussy? BP ultimate available at 142.9 at Pelican Whitehaven, same price for Texaco super at Bigrigg of 141.9 for Esso super in Whitehaven.

Have I missed a trick?

Will use Esso until Tesco give in to me!!!!!!

Welcome to the forum.

It shows Gem in Maryport, if any good.

No idea what Super Unleaded that will be.

There will have to be a massive demand until Tesco install a pump selling the super stuff

I can't see them doing it for the very few people who would buy it.

All the other Tesco superstores in cumbria stock it!!!!!!!!!

Don't underestimate demand - it is a large catchment area of whitehaven, workington, Egremont plus all the Sellafield traffic with a lot of performance cars commuting to Sellafield daily - and no competition from v power anywhere close.

Times are tight, why would people pay an extra 10p per litre if they can run the car on 95.

The only people who will do that are people in the know and a lot of them for some reason also avoid the supermarket fuel (as it's bad innit - why?).

If there was sufficient demand and they sold a tank of it great, but if there is huge demand for normal unleaded and they sell that out, then that's got a much bigger market.

That argument also applies to all the other Tesco supermarkets in Cumbria that DO stock it!,

Tesco pricing policy for momentum is to price it at 5p per litre above the price of their normal unleaded. At that price round here it would be a no- brainer.

The only premium fuel available in my area (Scarborough) is V-Power. This isn't a bad thing at all, but we don't have a BP garage within 40 miles of my home. I have to travel 7 miles to get to the Shell garage as it is but a bit more competition would be a good thing I reckon.

There are advantages to living out in the sticks near the sea, but it also has it's disadvantages too.

7 miles to V power and I would be in heaven!!!

Nearest v power for me is about 40 miles - hence the need to pester Tesco which is about 3 miles or pray that She'll spot the gap in their West Cumbrian coverage

So if they sell it at the other places in cumbria go there.

They obviously don't think it's worth it at the station you'd like it at and they're not going to change it just for you.

If the fuel made them money, they'd be doing it already.

The other tesco superstores are as far away as the v power sources otherwise I would of course have gone there.

Trying to work out why all the other Tescos in cumbria do stock it and whitehaven does not. If it is just the decision of one man ( I.e the station manager at whitehaven) perhaps he can be lent on (gently, of course).

Whitehaven don't stock it because they are afraid the local inhabitance may mistake it for jam and eat it. LMAO

I would just stick with the pelican and telco generally is rubbish in all things. But then again I would just fill up with the cheapest diesel available!

  • Author

Not originally being from west cumbria your comments have explained everything!!!!!!!!!!

Jam eaters you see!

I may be wrong as I know sod all (I am Cumbrian after all), but can you get some booster product to add into the best fuel you can find in your area?

Don't want to go down that route - for a number of reasons - would rather let the car adjust to a stable diet of 97 Ron until Tesco or Shell open up a supply nearer me. Don't think I will be doing the car any harm but I know the car is mapped to 98 so still a bit frustrated. Not sure I will notice any difference but every time I fill with 97 I will be cursing my local Tescos.

There's vpower in Penrith... As for anywhere else, ask Sharkrider

Thanks but Penrith is about 46 miles away from me

Sorry to hear your plight.

If you live in the Whitehaven are you do have a long journey to Barrow or Carlisle for the 99 Octane.

You probably need only every other tank fill to keep the octane rating above or around 98.

If you go to one of these main towns ie Barrow or Carlisle, and do the overfill trick by depressing the vent switch with the fill nozzle end and slowly add another 4-5 litres you will get back to Whithaven area and still have what is a full tank.

I have tried the Shell and do not think it it worth the extra few pence.

With Momentum you get double points at the moment. I use so much of it ie around 40K miles a year, that I get back about £200 in vouchers after doing the shop as well and I think you get 10p a litre off if you spend £60 in store so can save £5 on the fill up.

What do people who can't use regular do?

I run mine on super because I'm supposed to, and I run the other halfs

1.2 Fiat on it because it runs better on it (Especially in the cold)

Our local Asda only sells regular diesel and regular unleaded which suits me

as my Mrs would fill up there if they sold it. Since they don't she has to go

to an Esso nearby instead but at least it means she puts decent quality stuff in.

The Fabia VRS will run on 95 Octane as it just adapts the igntion but then you lose 5 or 10 hp which is a lot on this car plus it does less MPG so using Momentum is an economical choice too.

I think the Octavia Mk1 VRS also was suppose to run on 98 but the TSI Octavia VRS is happy on 95 Octane.

So you can, and some Fabia VRS owners do, run on 95 Octane but why would you if you can get Momentum and you want to enjoy the car?

Yup,it's like buying expensive organic sourdough bread and then slapping

Tesco value brand margarine on it. You just wouldn't.

Very good news. - spoke to Tesco directly and they even gave me the telephone number of their petrol station manager- they confirm that they can see the business case in favour of selling momentum at their Whitehaven store - they have confirmed that their whitehaven store will be putting in a request to be supplied with momentum but cannot tell me the timetable yet.

Won't count my chickens but but keeping fingers crossed.
