Octavia Scout Alloy Wheels

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am sure that this topic has been posted before, but ......

My Scout has the 17" wheels with 225/50 tyres. They are in a ******* awful state ! The laquer started to fail on the 5 shiny "spokes", due to poor adhesion ?, but has now spread around the rim and even started to fail at the inner edges.

Would I be correct in thinking that the only cure is bead-blasting to get a good surface for new lacquer ?

I am not bothered about "shiny spokes" the wheels can be all one finish, silver would be nice.

Also, what is a reasonable cost per wheel ? will give me some idea when shopping around.

I contacted a dealership, a couple of years ago when the car was still under warranty, they said (as did Skoda when I rang them) that the alloys were not covered under the warranty as cleaning could have caused the lacquer to fail (only used car wax cleaner and sponge !).

I have seen many cars twice the age with much better alloys !

Our works Scout recently had the wheels refurbed in uniform silver. Look good and certainly much better than the delaminated mess that they were. The tyres weren't holding pressure and the garage put it down to the delamination on the wheel rims. No idea of cost but can try and find out.

Sarge.

I am now on my second set of Proteus alloys after the first set were replaced under warranty due to delamination.

The second set now are going the same way as the first, but due to the fact that I had kerbed one wheel, I knew it would be difficult to get these replaced as well. Which proved to be the case.

I have been quoted £264 to get all four resprayed any colour (within reason!) by the Wheel Specialist in East Kilbride,(they have branches up and down the UK). They stated their pricing policy was based on the size of the wheel rather than the damage, again with certain limitations. They stated I would have the wheels back the same day, whilst other companies I have tried said it would take two to three days.

If I want them with a polished finish like the Proteus they will only give a six month warranty, but 12 months for non polished finish.

I am thinking of getting them sprayed gunmetal or titanium.

After much persistance I've had all 4 alloys replaced under warranty, even one with kerbing. My local body shop strips and repaints wheels for £35 a corner. Had my SLK alloys done earlier in the year with good results. Ill be doing the same once the replacements start corroding.

FYI my dealer was much less reluctant to replace wheels with tiny amounts of corrosion rather than when they were in a terrible state. betterment was mentioned several times.
