Please can someone help identify what this item is at the rear of the engine bay on my 2003 Octavia 1.9DTi? It seems to be a butterfly type thing on the inlet or intercooler. There is a small pipe not connected, just resting there! It's arrowed in the second picture, is it important?

It is the vacum actuator for the anti-shudder valve. It "starves" the engine for air when it is shut down so you get a more smooth engine shutdown. my hose to the actuator has been broken of for two years now and i have never really felt any difference

Btw. it also prevents "runaway engine" if you should ever encounter that. Maybe on second thougth i should get mine fixed
