Please can someone identify what this is please?

Please can someone help identify what this item is at the rear of the engine bay on my 2003 Octavia 1.9DTi? It seems to be a butterfly type thing on the inlet or intercooler. There is a small pipe not connected, just resting there! It's arrowed in the second picture, is it important?

Thank you

Paul

It is the vacum actuator for the anti-shudder valve. It "starves" the engine for air when it is shut down so you get a more smooth engine shutdown. my hose to the actuator has been broken of for two years now and i have never really felt any difference :)

Btw. it also prevents "runaway engine" if you should ever encounter that. Maybe on second thougth i should get mine fixed :giggle:
