New Octavia 4x4, UK spec - Why no Rough Road Package?

Featured Replies

Yes - I just noticed that. Try to spec an S or SE (16" standard wheels) with RRP, then the 17" options are greyed out. So that explains why Elegance does not allow the RRP. Unless I can persuade Skoda to put 16" on my order . . . (writing letter today)

  • The only reason I can think of is the larger diameter alloys are also wider and that is incompatible with the different suspension you get with the rough road package. But embrace it, as its the *onl

  • Anybody knows why we can't order 1.8TSI or better yet 1.8TSI 4x4 DSG in UK? That option is available everywhere in Europe as far as I can see but not in UK configurator and brochures?

  • The previous info from delarer was wrong.   The ground clearance is: standard 140mm 4x4 140mm (no RRP for sure) rough road package 155mm

Just to confirm. I got info from the dealer.

Octavia III ground clearance:

standard 140mm

4x4 +15mm

rough road package +15mm

So the 4x4 with RRP will get 170mm.

I made the same. Would like to get Elegance on 16".

From technical side should be no problem. Brake discs are the same?

In Norway one can select RRP on an elegance spec.,but then one is forced to take 16" wheels. However the swap from 17" to 16" wheels is free.

I have a couple of questions regarding the RRP.

1) I understand that the RRP includes a protection plate under the engine. Does this mean that if one has to change the engine oil and oil filter one has to remove the protection plate to access the drain plug and oil filter?

2) In Norway the roads are salted during the winter and I am afraid that salt water could find its was into recesses between the underside of the car and the protection plates and lead to rust. Can that happen?

You can only count the 15mm once. 4x4 historically includes the rough road package.

...that'll be SUK making bad decisions for us.... AGAIN! :(

I don't believe that the 4x4 automatically includes the RRP. My Octavia III 4x4 estate had option 2UF added which is described as "Chassis with increased ride height" and this also includes the plastic sump guard and underbody protection that is apparently part of the RRP (option 2UB), so in practice they seem to be the same thing.

I did not specify this option as the car I purchased was a stock order but feel very fortunate that it had been specified by the dealer when he ordered the car, as I would have requested it if I had ordered the car myself.

Without seeking to criticise, and therefore without comment as to whether I think it is a good idea or not, I would love to know why you want 18" wheels.  I have to assume you have some genuine reason.

Would you be using lower-profile tyres to keep the rolling radius the same, or do you want wheels with a greater overall diameter?

I'd be happy with 18's, not everyone wants function over form.

Yes, the lower profile tyres aren't going to be as forgiving as the higher profile tyres on smaller wheels but it all depends how far off road you intend to go.

If serious off-roading is required then I wouldn't be looking at an Octy 4x4, Scout, Allroad or Alltrack.

The furthest off road our Scout has been is a up and down a few kerbs and speedbumps, but the underbody protection has been useful on a number of on-road occasions (debris in the road and hidden speed humps) and it's been great in the snow so I'd happily have another despite not using it off-road.

Three of the 18" rims on a family members A4 were bent without ever going off-road.

None of the drivers admit to anything that may have caused such damage. But they were able to be pressed straight again.

I've dragged the belly of my scout several times on rutted tracks. Places you don't need a real 4wd, but you do want some more protection and clearance.

Good to hear about the rough rough. But any word on the Scout yet?

I've got my tickets booked for a (long) day out at Geneva in a few weeks' time so will do some nosing around - unless we hear something official sooner.

My first experience of the 4x4 was on the offroad track at Millbrook about 10 years ago.  The car was amazing, but the noise coming from the underbelly made it sound like a rally car.  The tracks were obviously quite rutted and the 4x4 was going at it all day long on regular road tyres...

...which reminds me. I might have a set of 18" Zeniths with AT/R tyres up for grabs if Skoda don't pull their finger out soon.  They don't fit my new car, and we'll be selling the old allroad soon. (Default size on A4 allroad and Peugeot 508 RXh if that's any help).  As they ride 1cm higher than normal, the ride isn't compromised and in fact the extra width makes for a less fidgety ride which you only notice when you change back to OE size.
