PD VRS DPF failure?

Featured Replies

My 56 2.0 pd 170 vrs attempted a regen this afternoon, but no matter how long I drove for the light wouldnt go out, went out this evening to try and force a regen but the car went into limp mode and now the glow plug light is flashing.

What is the best course of action? take it to the dealer and see if it can be regened? or remove the DPF and have it mapped out?

Likely cost of going to the dealer to have a regen?

Was looking to sell the car soon so could do without a big expense.

Mileage is 81,000, only the 2nd time the light has come on since owning.

thanks

Someone on here may be able to help you force a regen (and read the soot level). If you're selling it soon, that will probably be the most cost-effective solution. If you're going to keep it longer, its a cut and map it out job.

The first thing to do is get the car scanned to see the fault code.

Gas pressure sensor failures are very popular on the PD170. If the sensor fails it prevents the DPF from regenerating.

Now you are in limp-home mode nothing you do now will allow the DPF to regen itself. It either needs dealer visit or someone with VCDS to force a regeneration.

However this will be pointless if the sensor has packed in - hence the need for a scan ASAP.

Driving it as it is will continue to load the DPF with soot. The longer you leave it the more likely it will be that damage is done.

If you've only ever seen the DPF light of couple of times I very much the DPF is at the end of it's life. Ask for the Ash MAFF level when its scanned, this will tell you how much residual ash remains in the DPF.

A forced regen can be done in the dealers initial diagnostic check so the fee is often one hours labour - anywhere between £70-£90.

If the car is a keeper I'd be tempted to have the DPF gutted. This can be done for £450 all in and it'll still pass an MOT.

Thanks for the replies everyone, my nearest VAG dealer is 40 miles away, would I be alrite to drive that distance in limp mode or am I asking for trouble?

If thats a problem I dont suppose theres anyone in the Mid Wales area with VCDS who wants to earn some beer tokenage?

I've driven 65 miles in limp-home mode so you'll be OK to the dealers, or to a friendly member with VCDS.

This needs amending

Done!

I'll have to wait until both cars are clean before I take a new picture :giggle:

Can scan it for you if your anywhere near Newport or Cardiff assuming you are more southern than northern part of mid Wales..

You can do a forced regen with vcds. It's not hard but daunting to begin with, I am putting together a "how to" but I'm away from home in Toulouse on training.

The info how to do it is on ross-tech wiki, but I would scan the car first n chk the exhaust press sensor. If thats faulty change it n then do forced regen to reset ecu soot levels.

I'll try n get how to up soon as it is on my laptop here with me

I drove for several days in limp mode, all ok. Soot levels were low but had to do regen, need 2 people to do it safely. One to drive, one to monitor, you need at least 1000 deg to exhaust inlet to turbo to geg enough heat into dpf (hence fire wzrnings)

I don't know if the same each time but when the exhaust pressure sensor failed for the DPF on my car it was the engine light that came on rather than the DPF light, I didn't see the latter at all.

Same for me but when I took it in the dealer he said he's seen all sorts of light combinations for failed sensors / duff DPF's.

Originally I had only eng management lite on, I cleared fault as intermittent, but eng management lite, flashing glow plug n dpf lites came on a couple of days later, still fault showed as intermittent, only wouldn't clear this time. Ordered new sensor £51 inc vat, had to wait 3 days for it, still used car (had to) but since change n forced regen all ok

Thanks for the offer, I am based near Llandrindod Wells which is a fair trek so going to bite the bullet and visit the dealership. Can I take the car to a volkswagen dealer? or does it really need to go to Skoda? Thanks

No worries. I'd be surprised if VW couldn't scan it for you, are they much nearer then?

My nearest Skoda dealer is about 60 miles away, The closest VW dealer is just under 40 miles up the road.My engine management light came on this evening when I moved the car, so I now have the DPF light on, flashing coil and the engine management light, Im hoping its just going to be a straight forward regeneration thats needed, so I can get the car sold.

Isnt Hereford closer than that to Llandrindod??

Just over 40 from my front door, I live a few miles out of Llandrindod. Its 38 miles from Crossgates to Hereford

Is there not a skoda dealer there?

I was in the same situation as you a few weeks ago.

I was praying as I drove it to the dealer to part-ex it that the light's stayed off :giggle:

The relief when I handed the keys over and drove off the forecourt was immense!

I'm in Hereford quite a bit and have VCDS if I can help.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the Skoda place in Hereford...

Get it remapped and removed by the lads at shark performance, it'll be like a new car anyway once its done ;)

Im selling it so dont want to spend the money on it.

VW replaced the DPF sensor and forced a regen, total cost £202.00 bit annoyed at the cost but cheaper than replacing the DPF.
