Failed MOT emissions test... SAI?

Featured Replies

Hi peeps, haven't posted on here for a while but I have a problem.. the car was mot'd today and other than bits they could fix it failed it's emissions test and the ECU is saying the SAI which I knew was a fault on it's system anyway as I have done the SAI removal but I assumed that there was nothing wrong it just knew it was missing...

Either way it's failed and their only conclusion is that but from all the posts I've seen on here I don't understand how as everyone else's is fine as far as I'm aware?

So my options are to try and get some help as to why from you guys or see if anyone has a spare SAI system lying around as for some stupid and unlike me thing to do I have thrown the parts except from the plastic air pipes away...

So just so you know what I have done I have removed the pump, air pipes, engine housing & blanked and put in a resister in place where the pump was wired in with one off ebay marked as SAI removal... And followed and cross referenced the guides on here and other VAG articles.

Any help will be most appreciated and if you have a spare SAI to just put in place to rule it out then please PM me urgently

This will not cause your emission failure IMO you might have a diff cat or the car was emissions tested from cold !!

Sai will show fault even with resistor in place

To date I've not seen a car fail emissions due to Sai removal ;-)

I'll be getting the car back in a couple of hours so i'll post up the 3 stages of the emission test as if it's a large % over then it's probably the CAT

Cheers that's what I thought but as that's come up they're under the impression that it's that as they don't have much else to go on, car shouldn't be cold as I left it idling 10 mins before I handed the keys over lol

Don't think the SAI will potentially cause a emissions fail as all that does is pre heat the cat and your O2 sensors should be taking care of checking the mixture passing through cat.

what was your readings can you post them up.

I had a fail when my previous map was chucking in too much fuel and it was worst at the rev range that the MOT test runs car at (between 2500 and 3100 rpm)

Also some folks get close to upper limit on emissions when they fit a sports cats.

What I would do is take car for a spirited run before MOT to clean out the cobwebs in the cat which can sometimes be the difference to a pass or fail.

This of course depends on weather you have a underlying problem that needs fixing.

Have they failed it because engine warning lights on with removal of SAI

No they haven't but what they're going on is that the light is on and it's failed emissions... I stood there and told the mechanic that removal of the SAI shouldn't affect the emissions as it's only there to warm up the cat on first start up and like mentioned above that other cars that have had the same thing done have passed... He tried to suggest that it might be in a sort of limp mode and not fueling correctly but I didn't really get that as if it's in limp mode it would be underpowered?

Will have the full results up tomorrow as I still haven't got the car back yet as it had a seized rear brake caliper so they couldn't get it done before they closed........

Even if it's not at operating temperature when the BET starts, by the time it gets onto the full test it'll be plenty hot enough. I failed a VRS Octavia on emissions today, oil was measured at 86 deg C at the start of the full test. Coincidentally I also failed it on a binding rear brake as well. We've got this one booked in next week to sort out.

Right then here is the full emissions test results:

Any suggestions would be great as I need it re tested in 10 days to do the partial retest

Could be a faulty pre cat lambda probe or MAF causing the car to overfuel. Its only failed on the CO content, the rest looks perfect.

Has it got a cat? If it has is it intact inside?

  • Author

Yep got a cat and as far as Im aware it's intact never taken it off since i've owned it... The mechanic said that the lambda appeared to be working within it's correct values? but I'll take it out anyway to inspect it.

I mean just from light reading though I assumed like a 1-3% over was a faulty cat usually?

If the EML light is on, the adaptive fueling is disabled, so could be that? Try clearing the codes before you take it back but give it a drive first. VCDS on block 032 should tell you if the fuel trims have adapted. It looks like it's running rich with low lambda and a high CO reading like that. Bit of a gamble really for things to cure it first. First step would be a bottle of Redex, then a new lambda, then as a last resort a new cat. I know mine are both getting a bit marginal as the emissions have been creeping up over the last couple of years as the mileage is just about to hit 150k

  • Author

Always run it with 99 and every other fill up with injector cleaner and no it's not the EML light it's the engine light

EML=engine management light - the little orange engine picture yes? If it's on, then the fuel trims have been disabled until you clear the code and do a few miles.

Would still like the complete SAI system if anyone has it

I have everything except the pastic hoses and the small pieces of vac hose (as I cut those).

I have everything including all hoses and was working fine when i removed for delete mod.

PM me if interested

cheers

As far as I understood starting 2013 any car with any fault lights on the dash will fail as a road worthy car should be kept in good working order.

Though I understand this is not your current problem even if you were to pass the emissions you would still fail the mot for the lights on the dash

  • Author

Well they weren't gonna fail it for the light on the dash only emissions after they sorted out other bits as it turned out I had a cracked rear spring and stuck rear brake...

  • Author

Pmed you bowders

thought all warning lights on dash display were now an instant fail under new mot regs?

I recently passed my MOT no advisories and I had the brake pad wear light on, but the said he could tell pads was new and brakes worked so no issue, not sure about other lights, but its still a warning light,

Engine management light isn't testable, the Octavia VRS I failed the other day had the engine management and ASR lights on, I advised both, as neither are testable.
