Traders Policys and covering private cars

Featured Replies

Ok before i get shot down for even suggesting it I am a dealer trained techy and have been for 14 years and intend to continue been.

I do odd bits at home and buy and sell the odd car but the only problem i have is that with the modified policy i have on the VRS and for that matter most of the policys i've had for years i can only drive the car that is covered and nothing else which can be a pain at times.

I did get a couple of quotes a few years ago but it wasn't really worth it then but am paying 600 quid to insure vrs and fancy a run getting something to run about in to keep mileage down on vrs and use as a tow vehicle as i intend to take my trailer test in next couple of months but am looking another 600 to insure anything as i would be taking another policy out with no ncb.

Anybody got a tradrs policy and any companies people recommend

Can't belp you out with this, though if you're going for a traders policy won't you get pulled by every police car fitted with ANPR as your car will show up as having no insurance? .... Or am I talking rubbish (as usual)

cheers

I know it covers the driver more than the car itself like the normal policys so am guessing its a valid point but some of the cars will be insured by other people anyway, it will only be the odd one that i buy and sell that will possibly flag up but i won't be using them all time anyway.

I've driven cars for years at work and run about on trade plates regular and have only every been stopped once and i was a passenger and not the driver then.

I think from a friend that has one the private cars, ie owned my me are noted down on policy so sort of cover you both ways so won't set off anpr camera's

Yeah, anything you drive regularly will be added to your policy like a normal car one. You can also add/remove cars (with a traders policy) via the MID website now I think.

Looks like a solution then and as usual I was talking rubbish :giggle:

Friend of mine has a Traders policy, he is covered for any car obviously, but he is allowed to add 5 or 6 of his own permanent cars per year free of charge. After that he gets charged something like £30 per change.

He is with Horbury Financial Services http://www.horburyfinancial.co.uk

If you have a traders policy and have an accident, I or one of my colleagues will be coming to see you and asking questions like do you have proof of trading etc and going into that in great detail, receipts, accounts etc. as well as all the usual stuff.

Genuine traders seem to add and remove vehicles all the time.

Do you have trade plates etc.

There appear to be different policies as well, as a mechanic only needs to drive other people's cars, but somebody who buys and sells has needs that are different.

I have spoken to a bloke on phone from swinton commerical who told me the same,

I'm only interested in road risk at the moment as i don't have time to buy and sell like i have done in past at moment with trying to sort repo house we have bought,

Had a couple of multi car quotes but been as i have no no claims on a second car am getting quoted 500 quid to insure a 1.4 corsa on top of the 600 they want to charge me for vrs, plus am still not allowed to drive anything else

With the multicar quotes if yo ring the insurer they will in most cases mirror your NCD on the other vehicles. Sky insurance have mirrored my NCD on my bmw 740i from my Kia Cee'd too.

I thought about a traders policy as I genuinely want to get into buying and selling cars. My problem is that I love cars too much and I'd never sell them on!! Although I am thinking about a change from the 740i now...

Once i get my little corsa ready for road ill be phoning them back and if i need to drive owt else there always day insurance
