Servicing - engine flush

Featured Replies

So i am planning on servicing the motor soon.

i have seen plenty of things about not using an engine flush when doing this.

I had hoped to drain the oil chuck some cheapo stuff (asda/wilkos) in and then remove before putting the decent stuff in.

however, i am worried about any additional wear etc to the cam. (also, do you change the filter before the cheapo goes in or before proper?

What are everyones thoughts?

Also, i am sure i read on here someone runs the engine on hydraulic oil to act as an an engine flush before putting the new oil in. Has anyone done this? what oil should be used?

Finally...where is best to get the servicing parts from (CP4L)? What brands best for fuel/oil etc

Cheers,

Kyle

Firstly, you need to have the engine at normal operating temperature before you drain the oil. this way, all the crud is held in suspension, within the oil, and as the oil is thinner when hot will drain out more effectively. Mind your hands though as it will be very hot when you remove the sump plug. Personally, i only use OEM parts on my car, but as long as you buy a reputable brand, you should be ok. As for the oil, if you know what specification your car requires, then that is what you should put in, and nothing else. But, to clean the engines internals more effectively, it wont do any harm whatsoever, except to your pocket, to change the oil more frequently. ie every 500-1000 miles until you are happy with the cleanliness of your internals. It wont stay clean for ever though. Change the filter along with the oil, the first time you drain it, then do an oil change after 500-1000 or so miles, then again with the filter and oil after another 500-1000 miles, so that when it has its final oil change there is a new filter at the same time.

I did try flushing with hydraulic oil ONCE, and although i had no problems with it, it was not a modern engine, and still had push-rods to operate the valve-train. I would NOT recommend it today.

Those are my thoughts, but i am sure there will be loads of different opinions on here.
