Okay

I've got 77k on the 5yr old war beast and it's due the 4th variable service.

I'm going to sell the car towards the end of the year or early 2014 to help fund a mk3 vRS.

Do I take a sting and pay £250 for a stealers service, or seek a cheaper route?

Cheers

Danny

Whats the car going to be worth at the end of the year £5k? I would keep up the service history but if its cheaper go to an Indy... I don't think the extra you pay will be reflected in the sale price and you are likely to get better service.

Independant on that mileage

Price up the service from the indy and see if Skoda will match it.

If your competent to do it yourself then thats what id do,mine was dealer serviced for the first 4 years & now i do it myself,i was thinking of replacing mine bit ive decided to keep it & run it for another 10 years (hopefully)

OK, it's looking like an indy job. Thanks for the thoughts people.

OK, so, I made some calls today.

The best local indy price I could get was £125. This included long-life oil and I know the service will be good (family have used the same garage for years).

I rang Simpsons @ Colne and they, after a quick chat, offered to do it for £179.

Is the Skoda stamp worth £54 do you think?

It's all down to labour costs. I have just got oil, fuel, air and cabin filters (OEM), 5 litres of Quantum 507, sump plug and 5 litres of VAG screen wash concentrate all from TPS for under £75. I bet the dealers pay less than this as well, so anything over £75 is labour cost and profit.

DIY not worth it if you are looking to sell & its a fully stamped book to date

If indy has a reasonable name then why not

Odds are the main dealer will find a few other non essential things that need doing as well

Some binding on rear brakes, brake fluid needs changing, aircon needs servicing and tyres are not looking hot either.

Nothing huge, although the last of these was not an expense I expected to deal with for another 6 months.

I always found Simpson's very good at finding additional work that 'needs' doing.

Most dealers will.

When I had the pleasure of the local Ford car chain who phoned me at every service for discs and pads all round, aircon clean, aircon regas, engine flush, siezed brakes.....

Just done mine today with parts from tps, oil air and pollen filter. Not a hard job to do on the drive. Just the occasional shower to contend with...

Self service is fine if not under warranty as it voids it, or the Car is over 5 years.

Otherwise it'll wipe value from your car

Car is 5 this September and has done 98k so I'm past dealers really caring!

My fabia had main dealer service upto just under 100k.

Octavia has a "service plan" until the end of this year. After that? I might get it serviced at the likes of Shark etc.
