Air conditioning failure - ca anyone help please?

Featured Replies

Hi kids,

Aircon has been fine for years on my Vrs, then the other day when it was switched on whilst I was driving, upon stopping at a junction, I noticed the idle was a little erratic, there was a bit of a vibration, and a loud 'whirry' noise coming from the underbonnet area.

I worked out that it might be the aircon, and as soon as I switched it off, the noise, vibration and erratic idle ceased.

So, an aircon fault.

Today, I took it to a garage, and we checked for fault codes (none found - although it wasn't a full Vagcom system used) checked the fuses - all good, so hooked the aircon up to the machine. It sucked out a lot of gas, so it didn't look like it was a leak or just a low gas level. Anyway, after a vac and re-fill, there is no difference - it still doesn't work.

The centre clutch on the compressor is not engaging when it's switched on, and the rad fans do not engage either.

So - any advice would be welcome please on my next move to diagnose?

Thank you muchly!!

Got a multimeter on all plugs/connections to make sure there's no wire breaks?

The most likely cause is a faulty fan controller. Did you check the fuses on top of the battery?
