question i have a set of axle stands and a tarmac drive....in hot weather any trouble of them sinking? and how do i get round it peice of mdf?

My friends fiesta had a blowing exhaust so i jacked it up and he whacked some axle stands under on his tarmac drive i got under the car and found the problem and told him to start her up to double check....the silly tit got in the car and a axle stand slipped.....heres me holding the car an inch from my face until he jacked it up again

yeah, some MDF, bit of old scaffolding board, anything sturdy to increase the footprint and spread the weight. I'd also advise the same if using a bottle jack, scissor jack and trolley jack if your tarmac is soft.

never had a case of stands or a jack slipping from under as long as the car is raised on a level surface, as it should be.

That was aimed at the MDF comment. I've never had that problem either. Luckily enough i've got a concrete drive so never had any issues.

* Off Topic; Are there any half decent scrappers round Pompey way, Tom as Silverlake are proper short on Skodas ATM

yes, there is Harris's in southbourne, he's always got a good stock of vag group kit, there was a pair of fabias up there last time i was there but that was a few weeks ago and they do tend to turn the stock over quite fast up there, there is a vw specialist breakers yard just the other side of angmering, west Sussex.. But my favourite yard is probably silverlakes in botley.

If I'm worried about axle stand slippage, I use some lengths of railway sleeper cut into 18" lengths to stack flat under a car, then when the jack is let down any sharp edges grip into the wood as well. If it's good enough to support a train, it'll hold anything I drive. I also give the car a good shoving to check it's secure before the wheels come off, or I get under it. I also use wheel chocks, which are cheap to buy or make out of wood.

Im using facom / britool / teng

Old britool as the new stuff's been taken over by stanley (never a good thing)

Is it not facom that took over britool? Iv got alot of britool expert stuff and they have the facom logo on them

Have to say the britool expert stuff seem to be pretty solid and the spanners are quite rounded so they dont hurt your hands, only bad thing is alot of the bars and stuff have rubber grip handles which will no doubt become loose over time

If you can get your hands on a trade card the discount is awesome, got a socket set with everything you'd need for £75!

Most of my tools are Bahco or Facom and they're decent enough quality but I was looking for a new 1/2" socket set and a fitter showed me his Fat Max socket set, excellent quality although did take a bit of tracking down to get the right set and price, its every bit as good as the Facom socket sets although no doubt time will tell.
