2.0 Tdi manual gearbox - gears/engine rpm

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Just a quick one - with a manual gearbox, I was wondering if anyone with the above could tell me what rpm the engine is 'ticking over' at, in 6th gear at say, 70,80, 90 mph?

I have an Octavia 2 FL 2.0 tdi so anything similar to mine would be ok i.e. 1900rpm in 6th at 75mph.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Not paid too much attention to this yet so will check next time on motorway but I think at 70 it is doing about 1750 rpm in 6th. It's definitely lower reving tnan the 170CR fitted in the Berb I just got rid of.

If its like the Golf Mk7 (which id expect it to be) the 2.0 TDi had extremely long 4th, 5th and 6th gears. Autocars road report on the 2.0 TDi 150 said it was geared to do 130 in 4th, 135 top speed in 5th and a few mph less in 6th. It'll barely be ticking over at 70 in 6th gear and you'd probably really need it in 5th at that speed for it to really pull properly.

My old MK6 2.0 TDi 140 had too longer gearing IMO and it was not able to pull that sort of speed in 4th. The new car is obviously alot more eco focused than the last one but I think its long gearing hurts its overall performance. Be interesting to see if the DSG is similarly geared as in my MK2 vRS Octavia the gears seem alot shorter than those in my MK6 Golf and in terms of performance its all the better for it; found the performance of the Golf v underwhelming and amazing what 30hp and shorter gearing can do.

Thanks for your replies, I'll check that out on youtube. Usually they only show how fast they can accelerate, but you never know! My boy racer days are long behind me. Anyway, that's what I like about modern diesels, they're good for cruising. If the 1.2 tsi Octavia had a REALLY long 6th gear, like the Tdi, then I'd save the money and buy that, but I believe at 75 or 80mph it does about 2750rpm or 3000 which is a bit 'busy' for me. Alas, you can't have everything.
