Tenuous link...but about other drivers (not skodas)

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed what a bunch of nobs Merc drivers are recently ?

Had one try and undertake me on mway when I was already commited in overtaking position in the overtaking lane

(I continued my overtake but had to horn the guy as he clearly started to pull out - and had to actually take evasive action to the drivers side hard shoulder) only about a week ago....okay he was indicating but not soon enough and he also didn't have enough power to come out in front clearly

Okay I know, I ought to chill more but when others start in the wrong you often feel you should continue regardless (like no doubt with the shoe on the opposite foot I'm sure they would)

And today, some utter **** in another who decided not to signal and just pull out on me, causing me to have to brake and lose at least 20mph in speed ( and I wasn't speeding either)

In both situations they are causing a vehicle to take evasive action, hence really poor driving started from them.

I will admit this then causes my driving to become poor but one thing I can confirm is in both cases they eventually were left firmly behind me despite often attempts to the contrary

To be fair with respect to other makes haven't really had any such experiences as the above in a while.

Is it because people just massively underestimate the speed of the vrs?

I'm afraid to say it isn't just Merc drivers.

Travelling up the M1 yesterday morning, in lane 3 behind 2 or 3 other cars, and we're all overtaking slower cars in lane 2 at a reasonable pace.

There had been a Superb hatch behind for a while, following a bit close but not a worry.

Suddenly he disappeared.

He reappeared very quickly directly in front of me from lane 1 straight into lane 3, squeezing between the 2 cars in lane 2 that I was passing, forcing me to brake very sharply nearly getting collected by the car behind.

He then decided that the car in front was in his way so bullied that out of the way by following about 6 ft behind that.

Oh well, I suppose he'll get his one day ??

The real problem is that driving regulations are not enforced. They have recently announced that anyone hogging the middle lane will be prosecuted and fined. OK, but what about the undertakers, the tailgaters and, of course, the people driving over the speed limits?

Everyone wants the rules applied until it's applied their driving. Sorry, but 99.999% of UK drivers are not that good (myself included).

I encounter lots of idiots day in day out. I do 100 miles a day going up the M1 and back and there's no end of them. Ontop of the heavy traffic in leeds. It can be a very stressful day lol.

The good news is you recognise your driving needs improvement.

That's a good start.

All you need to do now is sign up for an advanced driving course such as IAM Skill For Life or thee ROSPA Course.

It'll probably be the best £100 you ever spend.

I always drive as though other motorists are idiots. Mostly because they are and cannot be trusted.

Always try to anticipate what they might do from their style of driving and be prepared.

I am on no way saying I am a good driver but if you expect people to be bad drivers it generally helps avoid dangerous situations

Audi/BMW drivers far worse than merc...

Oh and old drivers.....

I have to disagree, it's not just Merc/Audi drivers, it's the majority of road users. We all think we're great but the truth is the test we passed xx years ago was the minimum standard required to be in the road and most people have done nothing to build on that since.

I tend to ride on the basis that every single other person on the road is a deaf/blind zombie like idiot hell bent on my destruction. Occasionally I'm surprised by a considerate driver but it's getting rarer.

Before anyone says 'bikers always say that about car drivers' I am even more wary of other riders, especially the weekend warriors/power rangers, they genuinely annoy me, not only because they look stupid, but because they tend not to be able to corner and are about as smooth as a 3 cylinder diesel making riding with them awful.

Personally I'd like to see a requirement that every 5 years you have to do 5hrs with a DSA certified instructor and pass the equivalent of the current driving test. Make it every 2-3 years for anyone over 65. Not only would the standard of driving improve but we'd start seeing driving/riding as a privilege, not a right.

I commute the same A road/motorway route all days of the week due to my working pattern.

I can safely say the standard of driving on the Motorway is noticeably worse at weekends, with all kinds of examples of poor motorway driving on show. It's also interesting to note that a lot of experiences shared by some earlier posters occurred on weekend days.

Can I suggest that there are a lot of very unconfident drivers too who hesitate needlessly and of course the slow drivers too who are potentially just as unsafe if not more unsafe due to the fact people who want to drive at a steady, economical and constant speed wish to overtake

I've done IAM, ROSPA, Drive and Survive, Skid Pan training, snow specific training, John Lyons, Porsche fast track course, BMW Nuerburgring - you name it, I've done it. And I'm still awful! I don't speed, I don't tailgate, I try to be courteous (but that often ends badly), I use extended driving techniques and although I really love driving, I'll never be Jackie Stewart or anything remotely close.

I know ALL the theory, it's the execution that let's me down!

look on the bright side.

at least you know what you should be doing.

most drivers don't even have that advantage.
