Replace front brake pads on Octavia 2.0 TDi PD MkII - Easy?

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm really trying to save some money at the moment and the warning light has come up on the dash for new brake pads. I'd like to have a go at it myself but just wanted to know from other people what their experiences are? Do I need any special tools?

Would really like a good step by step guide on it.

Cheers

Dan

Hi, I'm not totally sure about this, but I think that there isn't a Haynes manual for the Octavia II 2005 on.

Here is the manual you want

I would also try boot fairs and secondhand bookshops.

Well spotted, I only noticed the Haynes Petrol manual :hi:

Pad spreaders make the job easier but aren't essential.

Otherwise relatively standard and straight forward.

Rerally appreciate everyones replys, I've just bought that book from ebay so I'm hopefully going toget it by Thursday and then buy the parts for this weekend. Which brake pads would you recommend? Ive seen pagid ones which are listed as recommended or are the Bosch ones significantly better?

What are pad spreaders?

Think of a Gynaecologist....

had a look at the discs tonight, they look like they could do with replacing as well, are they also easy to do?

Can I ask what kind of mileage the car has done on the old pads?

To be honest I really dont know, cant remember when they were last done (car is on around 140k now). The rears were done a few months ago at the garage so i guess its just the fronts now. I should also mention that the rears had their discs done at the same time as well.

Something like this:post-59543-0-53580300-1370980071_thumb.jpg

Makes pushing the pads / pistons back a bit easier than 'bodging' methods.

Not essential though.

Not like a calliper rewind tool for the rears...

Stil not got round to doing this yet, although I have purchased the haynes manual :)

Ive been looking at the discs and they only have a very slight ridge on the edge, is that the best way to tell?

Money is really tight at the moment, so I was thinking if I could get away with just pads that would be good!

Don't bother taking off the caliper carrier , the discs come off without removing it

forgot to mention, the brisk25 voucher code doesnt seem to work at the moment. is there a new code?

No. Best way is to measure the thickness between the actual faces with suitable calipers or similar tool.

The minimum thickness should be stamped into the edge of the disc. If you can still read it and there's only a small lip, then you probably don't need new discs yet.
