Golf GTi

Featured Replies

On the adverts now. Often copied never equalled . Is this true ? or just false advertising ?

I assumed it was a stab at the 208 adverts that claim that 'GTI is back'.

I've read/heard/watched several reviews saying there are better cars than the GTI. If you believe them then you'd claim that no, the Golf wasn't equalled, it was bettered. I imagine that's what VW would be arguing too, the competitors would be either better/worse than the Golf, not identical/equal too.

On the copying front, wouldn't you need to be the first to be copied? Surely the Mini Cooper S/GT, a hot version of a normal car came first? That's all the mk1 was, a normal car with a bigger engine, same as the Cooper S in the 1960's. And I think there's a couple of others too (a Sunbeam springs to mind).

True :p

Wasn't the Golf GTi the first ever hot hatch though?

Well they couldn't do a campaign that said

'Golf GTI, nowhere near as good as an RS3'

0-60 in4.6secs The RS3 2.5t 5 pot gives 335bhp and 332lbft

of torque between 1600 and 5300rpm.

As hot hatches go there aren't many hotter.

Err.. it's in the middle of the VAG range.

Supposedly better than the Skoda/Seat version of the same car but not as good as the Audi S3.

I guess because the S3 has the benefit of quattro they can say it's the best all round front wheel drive practical daily/hot hatch. (from a biased VAG viewpoint)

RS3 looks a hoot, as does the new AMG A-class.

But with both of these (when new and available) you were talking around £40k.

I think Renault had something 1st, in the R5 Alpine from 1975....

But certainly the Golf cemented the term.

Talbot Sunbeam Lotus & Vauxhall Chevette HS were also there before, its just the term 'Hot Hatch' had not been penned.

Hillman Imp Stilleto was the one i lusted after many years before and VW GTI.

But that had not a Hatch like the Standard Imp..

eg,

A Sunbeam Stilleto, but sadly not mine.

Alfa Sud I heard.

Sorry lads, I stand corrected. But as you say, the term Hot Hatch was probably coined by VW.
