Octavia Estate 4X4

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me when this model will be available in the UK?

I'm hearing all sorts of stories that it won't be available in the UK until 2014

I was in speaking to my local dealer about this while deciding whether to save or bin the current Scout.

He suggested Autumn this year for delivery of a 4x4 Estate, and the new Scout more likely for 2014.

By "available" do you mean if ordered now, when would it arrive?

You can certainly find the 1.6 (£21,490) and 2.0 (£22,390) TDI versions on the SUK website "Car Configurator". (You'll find the 4x4 as an Engine Choice of the Octavia Estate SE model). But in terms of if ordered now, when would it arrive, I doubt you'd see any this year.

My Octy II 4x4 took an absolute age to arrive (8 months after placing order) and although I was never given a convincing reason for the delay, I got the impression that the factory would wait for a minimum number of orders before changing a production line from LHD to RHD models. (Which would make sense from Skoda's point of view - but frustrating as hell for those having to wait as I did).

If I were going to order an Octy III 4x4 tomorrow, in my experience, I wouldn't expect to see it before March.

I guess it's because british models needs special customization (steering wheel on the right side), while we make due with the standard euro model.

I was told by my dealer that all 4x4s ordered in Norway before june 30, would be produced in August.

Thanks for the replies, I'll go back to my local dealer and ask again!

Spoke to Winner Skoda in Cinderford yesterday.

Thay say September for the 4x4.

... and when it arrives, I will be interested to see if it suffers as much from extra fuel consumption compared with the equivalent 2WD version as the Mk II does.

Sadly, I'm not holding my breath on that one - the biggest (permanent) disadvantage to a car with the (only-occasionally-useful) feature of 4WD traction in slippery conditions.

4x4 is not just for slippery conditions; now on my fifth 4x4 car and have tried a couple of times to switch back to 2wd but I always find I end up missing the 4x4 system, particularly with Haldex. Holds the road much better with no front wheel drive nose lift on pulling away and associated wheel slip on poor surfaces and for fuel consumption, then with a 2 litre diesel lump (PD or CR) the average has always been mid to upper 40's and the Octy I 4x4T was mid 30's.

Yes, and sadly, that is far worse than the 2WD equivalents. I appreciate that the 4WD system adds a little bit of extra weight and a little bit of extra mechanical friction, and the 4WD version is a little higher off the ground so perhaps has a little bit more wind resistance, but in view of the fact that it is a 'part-time' 4WD system, I have never really understood why it is that bad for fuel economy.

The added weight is around 70kg now so very little in it considering the advantages it brings. Personally I think the difference in real life attainable mpg is very good. :)

Would be interesting to hear a like-for-like comparison in the real-world fuel economy of a 4WD Octavia compared with a directly-equivalent 2WD version, driven by the same driver in the same way in similar driving conditions.

Unfortunately, from all that I've read, although the real-world fuel consumption, in absolute terms, may be very different from the "official" figures, the difference between the economy of the 4WD and the 2WD really is as great as the "official" figures seem to suggest. Pity.

And, I think, slightly puzzling.

Haldex is often mistakenly described as part-time but I'd more describe it as variable; it's always there to a lesser or greater degree. It's some while ago now but from memory the difference between our 05 Octy II TDI PD 140 and it's replacement 06 Golf V 4motion with the same engine and chassis design, was about 5mpg (low 50's against high 40's) and to me that was worthwhile for the improved ride and road holding the Golf had over the Octy, oh and both were sport models so the ride height was also similar.

Good point - thank you.

An interesting and helpful post.

What sort of real world economy are we talking about for the 2wd? my 2.0 tdi 4x4 has averaged about 44mpg since I got it in December.
