1.9 tdi starting to use oil

Featured Replies

Hi

Our much loved 2001 1.9 tdi is starting to use oil for the first time in its life - its currently on 102,000 and has been regularly maintained and is well looked after. What is the most common cause of this on this particular model. Unfortunately it has to do another 3,000 miles in the next 5 weeks getting my better half to hospital for radiotherapy - so can't have it in the garage to sort it out, it has to be used every day until the radiotherapy is finished.

Any thoughts on the subject would be gratefully appreciated.

If its not using gallons then keep topping it up whilst you need the car then investigate.

Most likely causes at current mileage are valve stem seals or turbo seals.

Do you ever see any smoke?

It's also worth looking at the EGR valve if it has one. These certainly weep oil on the BLT engines.

Turbo oil seal

Turbo oil seal

Would that puff smoke on startup?

Breather blocked?

Sump plug leaking? Gets hidden by the under tray foam so you don't see the oil.
