What sealant is recommended for the rear door seal leak fix ?

Featured Replies

Think I've got a leak from the rear door seal on my Superb.

Watched a few clips on YouTube and wondering will bog standard silicone sealant do the job?

From what I read around the subject when looking to do my driver's door; some people who've used silicone have seen the repair fail, and silicone if it does stick properly may mean getting the door off is painful if you need to get to the lock or window mechanisms, and the smell while curing can be quite rank. VW sell a kit of a primer / cleaner and a tube of black stuff, which I think is silicone based but I'm not sure.

I saw in the fabia forum a few people raving about Shell Tixophalte, which is a bitumenous compund used for roofing and road repairs, plus underwater repairs. It apparently doesn't properly dry out, and can be removed with white spirit if needed. I bought this and it worked great - applied it to the join between the carrier and the door panel, without removing the carrier, in a thin bead and then smoothed out with a wet finger. Did it a year ago and working great.

In the meantime, a trick the fabia guys do is to clothes peg a plastic bag to the door pocket, which if the leak is around the bottom will act as a barrier.

Get some GOOD quality silicone. £1 tubes from the likes of B&M and the Pound Shop aren't great.

Plumbers merchants do a variety called "785". Before applying it, stick it in the fridge/freezer for a while. It cools it down, making it firmer and easier to apply in a bead. Then leave overnight to set properly without any vibration.
