Lower without ride suffering

Featured Replies

Hey I want to lower the vrs, don't want it slammed just a bit 30-50 maybe, don't really want the ride to suffer too much and I don't do track days etc, in your opinions what am I best off going for?

1. Springs

2. Coil overs

Cheers I know this has been covered :/

If you only want to lower 25mm I'd say Eibach springs and standard shocks or spend the extra

and get bilsteins to suit. (B8 or B12 can't remember which)

OR

Spend as much money as you can on good coilovers.

The ride quality is usually relative to how much you spend on them.

Cheap coilies usually give a harsh ride.

Buy expensive (around a grands worth should do it) and you'll have an improvement

over standard in terms of ride quality.

Coilovers are uncomfortable

Springs would be better for you!

My mate has apex springs on his and gives it a nice drop! Looks nicer than an eibach drop! Ride is pretty good from what i can tell as a passenger! Almost stock feel

Cheers guys time to compare prices :)

I've got Jom coilovers and for the money I'm really impressed with the ride quality

Progressive springs.

What do you mean by progressive springs? Is that where the gap is different further down the spring?...worst description ever haha

Decent coilovers.

Best to explain it is this lolprogressivesprings.jpg

I have seen koni springs and dampers and they give a nice subtle drop. Cant comment on the ride though. Dont waste your money on eibach you will still have the 4x4 look, they may give good handling and ride buy they do bugga all to the looks in my opinion of course.

completely agree with Joe, 25mm drop doesn't change the look IMO. If I'm honest my AP's aren't uncomfortable at all compared to the JOMs I had on my mk3 golf.

Dont overlook H&R

More aggressive look as they are lower than Eibach.

I found my biggest problem with the ride was down to bad installation (just incorrect bump stop size, guess this is easy common mistake).

On new shocks so shouldn't expect them to be harsh and the rides at least as good as before (at 100K on original springs it was getting quite tired), but obviously as its lowered you can expect a bit more feel.

I'm very happy with the above - transforms the height to be more noticeable, though not radically so looks as "standard" as the car should originally have been anyway. You learn to avoid the road bumps that cause discomfort when you are lowered anyway

That photo isn't working mate?

Progressive means its not a fixed rate spring and tends to be more comfortable as it allows for a good range of movement and not "tuned" to a particular weight / spring rate I think.

Generally it means as the spring depresses the spring gets more compressed thus better suited for road use I think?

Linear springs are the alternative and they use on the track (bikes particularly) because they offer a linear spring rate that makes the suspension more easily tunable to the rider (but has to be better matched to the situation they are put in, e.g. rated

e.g. my bike linear springs are 9.5Nm

I honestly don't understand why you would need anything BUT progressive for cars, TBH ???

This is massively overthinking it, so if you want lower springs with reasonable comfort on a good budget, do H&R or Eibach unless you really want to lash out then look at the above about decent quality coilovers - job done. Its a road car not a track bike/car or something, its got to be a balance of comfort as well.

All great advice cheers guys!

dont go coilovers.

Even expensive ones will be a lot harsher than std.

Ive always gone coilies as I like the adj feature.

The higher you have them the better they feel but still harsh compared to std.

My ap's are far from harsh, even all the way down they are pretty bouncy. When i was running them with about an inch gap above the tyre they rode pretty much the same as std.

Very true, most people that complain about ride are sitting on the bump stops! The bump stops (particularly the rears) must be cut down or replaced with smaller cupra? items if you are going lower.

Any more info on wot to do with the bumps stops? cut or replace them? i think this is teh reason my fabia is quite harsh

If you want to lower but retain as much comfort as possible I'd say a good quality springs and shocks kit with not too much of a drop.

Chris69....just cut them shorter.

I didn't do mine (kind of on purpose as I didn't really know of any evidence of it causing a problem)

But it does...I trimmed mine down over 1cm (carefully....after I'd fitted it and realised it was a mistake not to  ) but it did make a world of difference but only from the actual shock absorber sense

Its not the harshness it will affect, its more rebound...because what happens is it hits the bump stops prematurely when it should be really allowing both the shock and spring to travel....

if not trimmed down this causes the suspension to rebound before allowing the suspension to fully oscillate out all the energy and its horrible...its more bouncy that not changing your suspension ! Definitely trim down the stops.

If you trim the bump stops by over 1cm it gives enough travel so it doesnt do this. It won't however prevent that sudden "drop" feeling of having much firmer suspension unfortunately.

Can't see any difference between just trimming them down instead of replacing for shorter. Its just to stop the suspension from travelling beyond a point where it could damage components normal tolerances (e.g. spring, shock)
