I use the Cigar lighter to charge my iphone. My question is am I OK to leave the lead plugged in when not in use, whilst the red light continues to show a connection?

The charger will still be consuming power, even with no phone connected. Eventually your car battery will go flat if left for a prolonged period. I would unplug it, not only to save battery but to also remove the risk of the car being broken into to search for a potential iphone/ipod or ipad.

I have put a cigar lighter to USB adaptor thing in there and there is a small green light on when its consuming power, and I never remove it, have left the car for anything upto two weeks when away on holiday etc and never had a problem, so either its still consuming power but just a very small amount or after a short time of no use it automatically powers down, either way, never had a problem and not something I would ever worry about!

The LED consumes so little power it's not worth worrying about. I had a Belkin micro on in for quite a whe and never had any problems.

Even leaving a phone on charge it will take quite a while to make the car battery go flat.

Hi I asked the same question '' cigar lighter usage'' and the best answer was from ''xpower'' who suggested rewire the ciggy lighter from the fuse box fuse box so that it is only live when the ignition is on, solves all the problems. haven't done it yet but will be shortly. - Bob

I have a 4G WiFi modem plugged into my ciggy lighter socket, so I have WiFi wherever I go, for work. Never had a flat battery because of it.

Would it depend on the technology inside the adaptor? Newer ones pesumably have some sort of auto off, older types you can sometimes hear them humming along to themselves.

Not sure what a wagon is, but if you have an estate, I'd be tempted to plug this into the 12v socket in the boot and hide it away behind the removable panel next to it. Stealth wifi!

I think estate - still unsure of the correct terms... Saloon, estate, sedan, wagon, truck, trolley, lorry, limo... Its all too confusing!

I've got a couple of aerials for it (it can connect to two) already attached and wired in, just have to find the time to hardwire in the 12v to 5v transformer and wire up the USB port to it, find a place to mount the brackets to hold the device (I'm thinking glovebox) and then it'll all be set up complete with long range comms for the 4G!!

I'm in I.T. and do a lot of work on farms and properties... But I also work in Sydney, so its great to be able to unplug the device, leave it in my pocket and have WiFI when I'm up in buildings and apartments too, when I'm not in range of the car.

I already thought about the boot option, but its too difficult to remove relatively quickly, should I have to.

I have to put in the effort, but I really can't be stuffed... Yet. :p
