Help - remote won't unlock and key won't go in barrel

Featured Replies

Hi there.

Don't know if anyone can help me. For some reason, neither remote fobs will unlock my car., I can still unlock the car by putting the key in the lock and turning, but, very strangely, it won't go in the ignition barrel now.

Neither key works - never seen this in 30 years of driving. Any ideas ?

Car is a 2006 ocatavia estate

it's not really your car? But seriously is the car high mileage and the key looks rounded on edges of 'contact'? Key been dropped recently?

2 flat batteries and a damaged barrel?

Battery on both fobs seems fine ( ie the light flashes when you press it on both, ) but car won't unlock nor boot open with either.

Both keys though will unlock the door "the old fashioned way" ie in the door barrel ( so it is my car and it is the right keys ! ) but neither will go into the ignition barrel.

Everything had been working fine this morning - it was not that the ignition barrel has been playing up or lose or anything . All the electrics on the car work fine, so it's battery is not flat.

Really odd....

Hi I know this threat is from old but stil I hope some one can help.

The same situation happened with my car REMOTE CONTROL IS NOT WORKING

KEY NOT GOING IN TO IGNITION

BOTH KEY HAS BATTERY

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel as you put key in ignition?

Thanks for replying

Yes I did but stil the key is not going in.

It happened 6 months ago but the remote was working I sprayed some wd40 it worked.

This time remote control and the key problem stopped working at the same time

I just noticed the steering wheel is not locked.normally it should be locked when steering is moving without key in.

I can move it to right and left

How far did you rotate the steering wheel? Mine locks only when the wheel gets to the 2 o'clock position

It never locks I rotate it 9 to 12 o'clock but it cant go more than that cus the tyre stiks to the kerb

my guess is that the lock barrel hasn't "popped out" when the key was pulled so the system thinks the key is still in     general wear and tear?

Could also be why remote locking is not working either, since you cannot lock the car with the key still in the ignition.

I disconnected both positive and negative battery cables. Left it like that for 2 hours. Then went back with a mechanic friend to the car, connected the cables and tried but stil THE SAME

Remote control not worked

Key didn't go into ignition

Could rotate the steering wheel to the left and wright so it didn't lock it

So my friend swapped a fuse which is for ignition (no 10 fuse inside the car driver side) still didn't work.

After 30 minutes trying and playing with the key into the ignition suddenly the key went to the ignition so he turned the engine on

Now everything is normal

So I don't know what was the problem and how it solved!!!

(my guess is that the lock barrel hasn't "popped out")

Excellent guess cus the steering wheel was still free to turn anywhere

Many thanks for anyone who replied.

Give the ignition and door lock a squirt of lube every 6 months to keep things moving, put the aerosol straw deep in for a 1 second blast.

Yes I do it with wd40. Thanks appreciate ur recommendations
