Sticky Window Switch... again

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

so, my drivers window switch is borked again..

it was sticky, cleaned it out, lovely.

then... it started again. and, on checking the plastic frame is cracked where the retaining pin for the switch clips in.

Just wondering if the part number - 1J4959 857 followed by a "B or D" instead of a C like on my Octy's Switch.

will also fit my car? mk1 tdi

thanks Guys :-)

The final letter of the part number is the revision. So D would be your best bet....

Cheers,

found one on Amazon for 8 quid, so wanted to check!

By broken, what do you mean?

Does it work?

Because mine for some reason sticks up when i close it. Like it stays up in the position you move it up to to close it... it's odd.

Gimme til 2moro and ill post a pic or 2, but that sounds the exact same as mine.

if you pop it off the door, and unscrew the switch unit from the housing, (after unclipping the power lead)

then unclip the drivers window rocker switch, the little upstand the rocker clicks into on the housing has failed,

and when you pull up the switch, the upstand just bends in, and the rocker slips off the little pin,

sticks up and doesnt activate the power button, unless you simultaneously push down on the back of the rocker.... a right PITA...

but, €10 inc delivery from where-ever-land to my front door for a brand new one off Flea-bay is great!

Sounds good. Nice little DIY fix.

My switch does still work, so will likely leave it for now.

Let me know how yours goes, cos I won't have a clue.

Just as well I can use the sunroof! :D

mmmm.... no Sunroof option on my octy unfortunately...

Have to finish sorting my sterring wheel this afternoon,

then hopefully upload all the pics.

Below, is the borked bit. im sure i cudve bodged it with some surgically applied Cyanoacrylate solution (read super-glue) but just too much hassle...

the little bit bent inwards, so the switch wont stay in place and sticks up.

Update - Sino Auto (apparently thats who i bought my new switch from) Shipped my new switch on July 2nd..

its now somewhere between China and Ireland... gettin a bit bored with the waiting...

pulled up at a toll plaza the other day having forgetten i couldnt open my window.

got a pretty funny look from the girl at the window when i opened the door to pay!!!

Woohoo, new Chinese window master switch arrived at last...

Looks like its the correct, identical to the old one that i'd removed.

just a PITA i cant fit it until the end of next week when i collect the Octy after a nother long week of work...

So, i finally got to fit the Flea bay master switch, at 4am at the work depot on my way home.

all switches work perfectly, the one touch fronts, for the first time since i bought the car..

and the rear window lock.

I'll double and post the part number later on, but be aware of one tiny flaw with the particular revision number i got..

all the switches & dials light up green in my Octy... except my new master switch, which is now red!

Going to swap over the rocker switches later from my old one to see if its that straight forward

Then go and wash the poor girl...  2weeks parked up and every bird within 20miles seems to have dropped one on her!

Looks good.

A simple swap out and put the new one in then?

My rear windows don't lock either. Sounds like an identical problem eh?

I'll look into it soon... I think my switch is getting worse as well... so it might be timely.

Cheers.

Yep, simple out and in. took longer to place the order on ebay than to do the job.

Unfortunately the lighting colour is done by the leds under the rockers,

so i now have 1 red lit instrument cluster...

to be honest though i dont care, and its less intrusive than the green.

so just be careful which revision number you get... seems its the colour!

If I recall right, the red was used in the Seat Toledo and possibly the Leon too.

I have ordered one from a broken vRS so should be the right colour.

How did you get the old one out? No need to take off the door card I hope?

  • Author

no need,

pop out the inner door handle grip trim,

lever up the plastic cover, all only clips togther.

unplug the loom

remove three retaining screws.

revers it to put it bac together.

I'll get a couple of pics tonight if you want?

If you could that would be good yeah.

The last time I tried to do something like this it stopped working properly. :D

You cant go too far wrong with this

Pop out the inner bit

Pop off the panel

Lift up the unit, and you'll see the harness plug

Turn it over, and you'll see the 3 screws to take out the old unit.

screw in the new unit, plug it back in,

push the unit back into place, push hard to pop the clips back,

replace the inner trim piece job done
