did i install these bits correctly (no instructions!)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

as per my previous, all of the KW suspension, ARBS and polybushes arrived. We stuck the lot on today; took about 7 hrs start to finish for 2 of us; the only bit we didnt get done was the rear beam bushes; thats for another day.

Anyway, nothing came with instructions, so fun and games was had, and I am unsure about the rear ARB; it seemed to only go on one way but we couldnt be sure. I have attached some pics. Its a KW item BTW. We were unsure of how best to place the RARB bushes, and if it was really as simple (and medieval) as strapping it to the rear beam with giant jubilee clips to squish the bushes down... very odd, but possibly correct. We ran the jubilee clips around the slight notch in the rear beam just before the trailing arm joint, and then crimped them into a shape matching the profile of the rear beam (sort of egg shaped in section!)

also the rear springs were coiled more tightly at one end than the other, and we couldnt work out which was top and which was bottom (it was obvious on the fronts).

overall, a good days work. Some of the polybushing was surprisingly easy. Some of it wasn't and involved hydraulic presses and swearing. Car seems a LOT stiffer afterwards and much more chuckable.

Looks a good job there

Generally the tighter wound coils on the springs get fitted at the bottom, but tbh not sure it makes a difference.

The ARB looks correct and the way the bracket are seem correct to.

Bet it handles much better..

I was going to mention the springs too...

Looking at your pic there it looks like your lucky enough to get the use of a set of ramps, so that's only a 30 second change round for you! I think the spring is slightly wider at the tightly wound end and seats itself better in the cup at the bottom. And the tighter end should cup round the rubber mount at the top.

Those rear springs are fitted correctly!

Im running kw's on my leon and thats how i've got them, the easy way to tell is by the manufacturing name on the springs, mount these so they are readable and the writing isnt upside down

Saying that im running coils!

Just have a look at the writing on the spring if its the right way up its right, if its upside down it isnt

They are not correct way as they are none coilovers and progressive rate springs which normally have tighter coils at the bottom. Weather this really causes any issues though not sure.

Sent from my Samsung S3

Strange as my coils sit wound tight at the top and are more spaced out at the bottom

The mind boggles

That ARB looks a better design than the Whiteline one I have. Neater :)

On previous cars,I've had progressive spring fitted and they've always had the tighter coils at the top :/

Normally tighter coils at the top.

thats how i have always fitted them as tec1e says

I think technically as long as its secure it shouldn't really make a difference to the way the spring works. It's wound the way it's wound, still has the same vehicle weight on it and one part will compress easier than the other.
