Side decals

Featured Replies

Following on from previous discussions about side decals and the fact that these aren't currently available in the UK in a graduated pattern, I am considering the idea of designing my own version and getting them made up by a graphics firm.

Something along the lines of this (but could be tweaked):

gqq5.jpg

It can made lighter/darker, font can be changed, other graphics added etc.

Does anyone have any input?

Also, does anyone know of any custom graphics companies? I've found some by googling but haven't made any contact with them as yet.

Obviously they will have to be a reasonable price and decent quality for this to work.

I see these decals and think extra protection to the lower doors, or am I missing something?

As I work in one give me specs (ie size). I will ask my boss and let you know although I dont see how can we be cheaper given the crisis here where I live, but one never knows.

130x1850mm seems to be the required size.

OK will ask and let you know on Monday so at least you have an approximation on prices (supposedly... given the crisis, lol)

Might look better using the genuine Yeti typeface rather than any old font?

  • Author

What is the genuine yeti typeface though?

I can't use it unless I can find it or import it to photoshop.

Not wishing to teach my grandmother granddaughter to suck eggs.....

I'd try a quick photo of the 'Yeti' on the tailgate, import it into CorelDraw (you're a Photoshopper, I know) and tweak a known font to fit over the undoubtedly special Skoda font. The nearest I can find quickly to suit might be CityD or Microgramma Bold.

If that helps? (I'm not a potential customer, by the way.)

And I think this is my one-thousand-and-oneth post :hi:

Yes that helped thanks. Managed to download and install these fonts.

(I'm not looking for customers!)

This should look something like this:

You have certainly got a customer overhere on the Isle of Man, see how you go Marie.

I won't be getting involved in selling anything, but if I find a decent reasonably priced supplier I'll happily pass their details on so anyone can order for themselves.

Actually, I could do with someone who has a Yeti (not me yet!) measuring the length and height on the car to make sure I have the correct size.

130mm might be a bit tall if we want a fair gap above/below.

Next challenge Marie - I like the decals idea - especially the grading - but what would the sticker look like against Cappucino Beige? Do you think?

^ #8 A tad italicised, perhaps, Marie? Not obvious, anyway, at this distance but when it comes to the artwork I'm sure you'd check.

I wouldn't do it at all, about 8 years ago i used to sponsor a local restaurant/pub in the area and i had the liveries on my octavia taxi for 12 month, when my contract was up i got them removed and the marks they shadowing on the paintwork was crazy, so had to take the car into a local detailer who polished, waxed whatever he had to do to bring the paint back to normal, never done anything like that again

Re above, I think for cappucino beige the graduated decal could have a beige/brown tone.

Here's a rough idea of what I mean:

Same goes for other car colours, the background tone can be anything you want. Ditto the yeti lettering.

(I've saved the photoshop file as psd, so each layer can be changed). This is assuming the graphics company can oblige!

I dare say when removed the decals leave a residue behind, but this can be taken off with tar and glue remover. My current car has road rash along these sides so if it will protect my yeti from that then its a fair trade-off I guess.

Hi MarieK, how about custom decals with pet names people may have for their Yeti? For my anticipated steel-grey Yeti I wouldn't mind getting a decal bearing the name "Lucky".

nrgb.

....a decal bearing the name "Lucky"....

That really would be pushing it!

THANKS Marie :) I think that looks rather good B) Slightly understated with a subtle undertone. Anyone would think you did this sort of thing for a living? And as you say, should help with the road rash and tar spots too? :)

Now I know better what Cappucino "beige" actually looks like from the Yeti Spotting thread.....And have finally found my car's paint code and a site that's confirmed what mine is.... Cappucino it is then! Either way it's a colour I particularly like, whatever weird name it's called.

Me also thinks I may recognise the spot were that photo was taken from a picnic stop on the way home from last year's family holiday - in the Auvergne?

How long now till you can drive yours home across the bridge?

I don't do this for a living, or even anything remotely close to it.

I do photography as a hobby though and have self taught photoshop, so I can usually muck around with it a bit ;)

Still don't know when I will collect my car...next couple of weeks maybe? I'm hoping its arrived at Grimsby on one of the boats this weekend, so will check with SUK tomorrow.

^ good luck with that, it is so stressful waiting but in particular if other things are geared to the delivery. I always seem to have this when I purchase a new car.

Hopefully I'll know soon, certainly by next weekend.

130mm might be a bit tall if we want a fair gap above/below.

Front door: 1023mm from leading to trailing edge, measured immediately below rubbing strip. No allowance for wrap-overs.

Rear door:   550mm from leading edge to base of trailing curve on rubbing strip. 570-575 to rear edge of rubbing strip (more like on mock-up).

Height:        155mm from base of rubbing strip to top of moulding line.  175mm to base of door edge proper. So, if you wanted to leave equal gaps between rubbing strip and door bottom edge, then maybe 135mm for decal height?   Or if bigger gap required then appropriate reduction to be applied?

Can I suggest that aligning lower edge of decal with the moulding line might make alignment during fitting that bit easier?

For the trailing edge, where the "Yeti" name appears, it depends if you wanted to align the decal with the rear edge of the rubbing strip, or with the base of the strip's curving lower edge?  I guess if the decal were made to the longer dimension, it would be simple enough to trim the leading edge off so the fit could be to the individual owner's personal preference?

By keeping to the trailing edge of the rubbing strip though, the decal wouldn't interfere with the clear protective foils that can be fitted to the lower trailing edge of the rear doors. I've just got a pair of those, but haven't got round to fitting them yet, so can't say (yet) excatly how far forward they extend.

Would it look wrong if there was a Briskoda member logo near the lower left of the leading edge of the front door?  Say 30-40mm dia? Or might that limit the sales opportunities for the manufacturer?

It does sound crass but each to their own. I meant "Lucky" as a subtle reminder to myself of how long I have to wait for my car...

Marie, might I suggest, to make fitting easier and dead straight, that the whole length be done in one piece.

The shut gap between the front and rear door should leave enough for a wrap round of each panel.

They're delivered by return nowadays, aren't they? :giggle:
