Sudden Loss of Power 2006 Octavia 4 x 4

Featured Replies

130,000 miles, full main dealer service history, last service 1500 miles ago.

Car running fine, no smoke, no noise. Suddenly, last night I had a dramatic loss of power. The car will not rev above about 2800 rpm (unless going downhill). The engine runs ok with no peculiar noise or smell and the temperature stays ok. I'm thinking a sudden turbo failure. Anyone care to comment ?

2006 1.9TDI?

Surely you'd have smoke with a turbo failure, might have gone into limp mode so guess you might have to have it scanned

Yes, i.9 TDI.

There are no warning lights showing. Would limp mode illuminate a light ?

I agree, a turbo failure would normally give smoke. I hadn't considered limp mode.

Limp mode doesn't necessarily bring up a light. If you cycle the ignition does it go back to normal?

I had a similar problem with my 2.0 litre tdi. Sudden loss of power, would not rev, no warning lights, no smoke. It seemed to have no boost at all but still ran Ok at low speeds. Decided to take it to the garage next day and it was fine. Could it have been a fuel blockage which only let a certain amount of fuel through so the turbo could not work. This was 6 months ago - no problem since.

I retried the car today, and all is fine. I guess that it must have gone into limp home mode. (I did have to give it some welly at an island shortly after a cold start so maybe turbo overpressure ?). Anyway, it's fine now. I think I'll give it a dose of turbo cleaner anyway.

Thanks for the pointers .....

Sounds like limp home mode caused by an overboost. Sticking vanes in the turbo more than likely
