Just ordered. Is it a downgrade or an upgrade?

Featured Replies

Hi all. Just came back from Farmers Leicester having a ordered a new 5-door Citigo sport in white. For the last 2 years I've had a green Fabia vRS estate, but really could no longer justify the cost outlay - I've worked out to be saving over £100 a month in fuel and £80 a month in payments. And that's before you take into account my insurance halving and the tax almost disappearing. SWMBO was nearly impressed if not for the fact I'm getting a new car again!

Farmers came up with a deal whereby I'm trading in my PCP early, the trade-in covers the outstanding finance and my £250 voucher from Skoda acts as the deposit on the new car. I specced the hell out of the Fabia when I ordered that (everything but the armrest pretty much) and like any wise person will tell you, options ain't worth jack come trade in time. I thought I'd learnt my lesson but there I was ordering the convenience pack and the 16" Serpence alloys for the Citigo. However, dealer told me that there are cars in the system I can have almost immediately but unfortunately no options - and waiting is only going to decrease the value of the Fabia not to mention my reduced outgoings in fuel etc (3 months wait would be £540 I'm losing). So for the first time in my life (probably) I'm being level-headed and sensible and going with the standard car (with a proper spare wheel mind). Am really excited.

It seems strange to tell people how excited I am trading from a 180bhp car to something considerably less. But I'm looking forward to being able to have a little more direct fun again - snapping through a manual box, and putting a smile back on my face again. Smiling in the vRS usually is only achieved at speeds outside the NSL, especially with everything being 50 zones these days.

Well It's quite a difference between the VRS Fab and a Citigo sport. But you should be able to have just as much fun in the Citigo at far less speed and be saving a lot of money to boot. The only time I miss being on my Ocky 140 DSG is when overtaking. But having said that I enjoy the Citigo it's nippy, fun and great to drive. So well done and enjoy. As most women justify things by saying 'I saved XYZ by buying this so it must be a bargain'.

Yeah I did think about the overtaking thing today driving back from the dealers and stuck behind a dawdler, blatting past them and thinking "probably won't be doing that for much longer".

What sort of wait have you been given for the sport?.Was asking my local dealer yesterday and was told a factory order for a Citigo was aprox' 10-12 weeks.

Hi Leckman - If I was ordering a car I'd specced myself (would have had convenience pack and serpence alloys) yes its a 12 week wait I was told, but dealer told me that if it's a standard 5 door sport then they can get their hands on one in about 10 days. Yay! Not long to wait. Apparently sitting at Emdem as we speak (don't know how true that bit is).

The dealer has a red Sport as a demo',think I will pop in and have a drive next week.

My dealer's sport is in the showroom, but I have driven an S spec car, which gave me a fair idea and put a smile on my face. I'm looking forward to the tightened suspension and grippier tyres, but didn't really push it anyway as it was pretty wet.

i used to own a Fabia VRs mark 1. I downsized to a Fabia 2 1.2 htp - and now i have a Citigo.

I've loved them all, and the Citigo is a hoot to drive.

In terms of power it's a downgrade, but it's going to be much cheaper to run and a lot of fun to drive.

Think of it this way - Its only a downgrade if the new car doesnt do all of what you need for day to day use.

If its only a very odd thing that the old car was useful for then its not really a downgrade as these odd useful times were very few & far between.

With money now becoming tighter we all have to look hard at our cars & decide what is essental & what is a useful / nice to have.

The Citigo is fun to drive.

It may not be fast, but because you have to rev it to get power and change gear yourself it is entertaining.

At legal speeds it's more fun making progress than in a Fabia DSG vRS where you press one pedal and go..

I would still have mine if it wasn't for the lack of reach adjustment on the steering wheel.

If they added reach adjustment I'd buy a 5 door Citigo Sport tomorrow.

Wether or not it's a downgrade depends on what you want from the car.

Honestly, I've found the Citigo much more fun to drive than that Fabia vRS. The 1.4 Twincharger is a technically brilliant engine, but it's completely soulless; there's the faintest hint of supercharger whine but that's it. And combined with the DSG box it's a little bit too efficient and clinical at getting you down the road. I think that's more about the engine, since I do love the DSG box, and the last car I drove with one (Golf R32) was brilliant.

The 3-pot in the Citigo needs to be rev'd, and sounds good - almost like half a Porshce engine ;) - it's quite raspy when pushing on. But it still does very good MPG and is quiet and refined at a cruise (but I suppose like most small engined cars, a 6th gear wouldn't go amiss).

Thanks for your comments guys. Bossfox - I found the reach adjustment control is on the seat adjuster lol. Seriously though, I found a pretty good position on the car in the showroom, so I'm OK with this anyway. And I'm right with you regarding the rev and shift. Babs - I think you're saying what I've been thinking.

Very rarely I will put forward a cogent, informative or helpful post on here, I'm glad you've appreciated it :D

So now what are you going to do for the rest of the year? You usually save your useful

post till Christmas or thereabouts. :p

I'm not sure, might venture into the Yeti section and talk about air ride and big rims ;)

Oh and 105 bhp would be nice.  Hey, who said Up GT? Come on, hold your hand up!

I like the look of the sport and the standard car is a lot of fun but a little extra poke would be .....erm...entertaining!!

Cool, really like the Citigo Sport, especially in white.

Wondering if there'll be a vRS version was something I've been musing over. But for me economy is king - it's not so much necessity just annoyed after looking at monthly budget and getting annoyed with the sheer amount being chucked into my tank every month. Honestly though I can't see it happening.

Not only that, but it seems to be russian roulete with the VRS whether you get an oil guzzler or not.

I can't see a diesel engine going in the Citigo. Small capacity petrols is the way forward for most manufacturers these days. Diesel is so dirty too, bad for the green stuff.

After just under a month of waiting finally got my new little white rocket this afternoon. Absolutely loving it after 40 odd miles of B-road blast. So far not missing the oomph of the vRS at all. This car's cornering ability is just phenomenal, and it really lets you hang on to the speed you've built up. Brilliant. I will be posting pictures after a decent home wash and detail at the weekend!

it does handle well, ash's has the 15 inch wheels with 185/55/15 tyres on, and given the weight / tyre width, it may even offer more than the 205's on the vRS ;)

Mrs Mercurio sat in the Citigo Sport on the Skoda stand at Goodwood and was quite taken with it ...until I tried configuring one and told her it only comes in red, black and white.

She wants blue or yellow and says can I start a campaign for more colours on Brisky :)

My first Saturday with my little beauty. I'll be washing and coddling and then taking some nice pictures to show you guys without an insect graveyard on the front bumper (the downside of early evening summer blasts) :)

Glad you like it :D
