Brake fluid change advice

Featured Replies

Evening folk's, going to be changing my brake fluid tomorrow night ready for a day at knockhill on Sunday. Gone for The Halfords DOT 5.1 race fluid as I've read good things and its relatively cheap. Anyways, just wondering what's the best way to go about it, to flush the whole system first and then bleed it right the way through or just top the system up with the new fluid and bleed it that way, first time doing this so please explain if this is the wrong way... Many thanks.

I swapped the fluid in our MK 2 Fabia, I used a syringe to empty the reservoir, then topped up with new fluid, I then pumped the fluid through to each corner, I used four top ups of the reservoir per corner, it was a little time consuming but quite simple to do.

Try not to get fluid on your paint as it is aggressive.

i know you said youve said you bought the fluid but euro car parts do some racing blue brake fluid .... and it is dead easy to change as it is very clear when its bled through .... i put it in my bike and its been amazing so far and has had good reviews online

I think it states on the ATE Blue, not for road use or competition use only.  not sure why though.

Thanks for the advice, think ill use a syringe like you did.

I am sure you will be fine, unless the brake fluid Police catch up with you..   :giggle:

you are right lol after researching ... it is illegal because it has a dye in it which may be harmful to the environment .... sounds bit too political for my liking lol

As long as it doesn't leak you will be fine.  I was looking at this for my Golf.

Im using the ate blue!

I must recommend a gunson eezibleed for bleeding though

Soo simple! Makes it a 1 man job and can be done in minutes! No faffing around!

Remeber to bleed clutch (nipple on gearbox) and the master cylinder

Cant agree more with this. Not only that you won't overpressurise the system with a heavy pedal.

I would think if the brake fluid has got into the environment then the blue dye used is the least of the issue lol :P
