vRS - Squeaking when Braking at Low Speeds

Featured Replies

Hi All.

When the car's been running a while and I'm travelling at very low speeds and tapping the brake very gently, a high pitched squeak noise comes from the car.

I've recently had my front brakes & pads changed and can't be this as the issue occured before I had this done. I assume there is something up with the back brakes/discs/pads, but unsure as to what the issue might be. It's recently been with Skoda and my local VAG Specialist for various changes and neither of them mentioned anything about it.

Any ideas what it might be?

mine does it on original disc and pads 14K miles from new

Mine does it every time its been left for a few hours!! Had it checked last time i was at the garage and they say theres nothing wrong that they can see!!

hmm so appears to be a common issue then!

I'm wondering whether it might be a build up of brake dust / general crap?

p.s. Kit - Gearknob still looking great mate  :hi:

I have no idea!! Mine have been cleaned and it still does it...mainly in the morning and after they have been wet!!

Wardy...glad your knob is still looking geat!!! ;) What can i say to that really?!!! ;)

Ah your issue is slightly different to mine then! Mine will literally only do it when braking at minimum speed and when the brakes are warm/hot.

haha not sure what 'geat' means.. irish for 'great' I assume

Stone trapped on the pad?

Stone trapped on the pad?

Thats what i thought but the garage stripped them and found nothing!!

"geat" its Irish for typing too fast!!! :)

Only noticed mine after reading this. Noise disappears if you reapply the brakes straight away. Lack of copper slip applied when new brake pads fitted maybe?

Mine goes pretty quickly after i stamp on the brakes at the end of the road in the morning :) But it does do it every morning summer or winter, rain or shine!!

Interesting that you've all got the issue as well.

sorry mate, but you're going to hear it all the time now and will hate me forever :) - could be lack of copper slip

Edited by Wardy-

I get this on occasion but a few steps on the brakes sorts it. . .

Should try leaving one for a week in a coastal location with salt air.....my brakes graunched badly for a good 20-30 miles afterwards....worst car ive had for disc glazing full stop.

Try some anti squeal shims on the pads.

I covered the entire rear of the pads with some of this stuff as apparently copper slip is next to useless....

And it still squeals.  Never did before I changed the disks and pads about 6 months ago.  It's totally doing my head in.  I actually don't want to drive my car anymore its that annoying.

Change the pads?

Even OEM parts can change manufacturer over time.

Give them an "Italian Tune up"
Most likely you  are not agressive enough with them.

My son has the same issue with his brakes.

This happened to me with my last 08 plate vRS. I had it in at my local Skoda specialist a lot of times, we tried different brake pads, they even tried cutting grooves in the pad as they thought brake dust may be gathering in the pad.

Tried three different brake pads in the end and the problem still persisted.

An interesting note though, it only started happening after I took the car into KwikFit for an MOT and service as it was close and local.

Anyway, the problem got that bad I just changed the car, was sad about it as well as really liked driving it.

Onwards and upwards now though with the Blackline.

Check the dust shields are not contacting the discs - had this problem on another car and it would squeal like a pig when I turned left at low speed. A garage friend of mine said it is quite common as the heating and cooling of the dust shield can cause them to bend inward - but not come into permanent contact.

Thought I'd post a quick update on this.

Had it resolved yesterday as the VAG specialists just gave the back wheels a service (re-grease, dust cleanup etc) and it's totally fixed. He said there was basically no brake lubricant on one of them.

Glad to have the annoying noise solved :)

  • 1 month later...

Mine have started squeaking as well.

60 plate, 24k, I assume all original pads, etc.

Will have to get it checked.
