Push rods clicking

Featured Replies

I was reading a topic on a Russian forum for Felicia (skodafelicia.ru) about that annoying clicking noise of push rods.

one user came with a solution that is said to greatly reduce that noise.

so I share it with you.

basically he said that when you set valves clearance you should insert the feeler gauge aligned with rocker arm, otherwise you end up with a lateral displacement of the arm.(see illustration)

that play is causing a bigger noise.

in illustration below, the feeler gauge is inserted correctly only under orange rocker arm.

the user also mentioned to make sure if you have steel rods or aluminum rods for inlet.

the aluminum push rods can be recognized from the press-fitted steel inserts on the aluminum tappet rod part.

valve clearance for steel inlet push rods = 0.2 mm

valve clearance for aluminum inlet push rods = 0.25 mm

valve clearance for exhaust push rods = 0.2 mm

setting valves clearance is done with engine cold.

Should that be Valve clearance for exhaust push rods = 0.20 mm

NOT valve clearance for exhaust push rods = 0.2 mm as you state

Please confirm.

^ Same dimension or am I missing something?  :smirk:

last time I checked, 0.20 = 0.2.

please confirm.

no,no,no, it SHOULD be 0.200mm, or 0.0002M if you prefer metric.

You can put as many 0's on the end a you like, it's still the same number.

let's focus on topic.

mikefelicia will not have the courage to admit he missed too many classes of elementary school.

My Haynes maual states -

Valve clearances (1.3 litre engine)

inlet   0.25mm

exhaust 0.20mm

And that is what I have been setting my 1.3 Felicia as for the past 15 years purchased new with no problems at all, a great car and I will hopfuly keep for another 15 years.

exactly as I predicted.

no courage.

still a 0 (zero).

or should I say 0.00 ?

mikefelicia definitely missed the math lesson on precision to "x" number of decimal places.

0.2  to one decimal place

0.20  to two decimal places

0.200  to three decimal places

0.2000  to four decimal places

0.20000 to five decimal places

They are still all the exact same measurement; the Haynes manual uses two decimal places because some of the measurements require it - ie 0.25mm.

my car has steel rods on all cylinders, therefore I set all valves clearance to 0.2 mm.

I also found some rocker arms slightly not centered over the push rods.

the clicking noise is over 50% reduced when engine is cold and not present at all when engine is at operating temp.

engine runs smoother and has slightly more power.

Hi everyone,

Need to find the valve push rods. Any place I can search? Thanks
