Rear passenger window dropped and smashed

Featured Replies

Washing the car this morning and thought i would open the windows to get some fresh air in,anyway all windows went down apart from rear passenger. Went round to the door and pressed the button. The window got half way down and literally dropped to the bottom of the door smashing into no doubt a million pieces....What the hell has happened????

Theres probably like a sissor mechanism that grips the glass a little like a Car jack im guessing its gone all the way down and seperated from the glass, maybe the glass got stuck on the rubber seal or something but then its slipped inside the door and smashed against the frame. Its a case now of taking the door card off and getting all the glass out and fitting new glass. Check the operation of the lifting gear while the door card is off to see if there's anything interfering with the mechanism or making the glass stick to the rubber seal.

ive spoke to a local garage who seem to think that the cabling that holds the glass has probably snapped, common in volkswagens and audis apparently. They are quoting £260 for full repair.

If it's anything like Renault (I had this happen twice on the driver's window although it didn't smash) you can't buy the bit that is broken, probably a 10p split-pin. they make you buy a whole window lift mechanism.

If you can find out whats wrong might be worth going to the scrappy. I doubt the rear door mech in the VRS is any different to the other Octavias or the most of the VAG group for that matter.
